Huge ShutterBug Update: Photo Albums, Smarter Captions, Better Renderer, and New Wiki

This is a large ShutterBug update focused on making the plugin feel much more like a complete server feature, not just a camera item. The big additions are photo albums, a stronger collection system, smarter viewfinder hints, better captions, renderer fixes, PNG metadata, and a full public wiki.




Photo Albums and Collection Progress

  • Added real ShutterBug photo albums as map-based collection trackers.
  • Albums show the selected collection, theme, progress, and a checklist of missing/completed photos.
  • Album maps render a collage preview of the selected collection.
  • Completed subjects use the actual photo that completed the album entry.
  • Missing subjects use labelled sepia placeholder tiles.
  • Players can cycle album collections by left-clicking and right-clicking with the album.
  • Added album commands for giving, refreshing, checking status, and resetting progress.
  • Added a configurable album crafting recipe.
  • Added album PNG export support so completed album collages can be used on websites, wikis, Discord posts, and update pages.

More Collection Content

  • Expanded the default collection set to 9 built-in collections.
  • Expanded the default subject list to 75 photo subjects.
  • Added the new Undead Mobs collection.
  • Expanded Rare Encounters with new special shots like Invisible Mob, Cows and Cows, The Crossing, and Herobrine.
  • Renamed and tightened the danger collection into Tricky Situations.
  • Added better subject priority ranking so the viewfinder can suggest the best uncaptured match.




Smarter Viewfinder and Captions

  • The viewfinder now uses the same photo evidence system as real captures.
  • Left-clicking with the camera can show what the frame is likely capturing.
  • The viewfinder can hint when the current frame would complete a new album subject.
  • Captions are now more stable and deterministic.
  • Captions can combine visible mobs/players, activity blocks, structures, and rare places.
  • Added better group labels such as Group, Barnyard, Pet Party, Monster Mob, and Chaos Crew.
  • Added debug evidence tools for testing what ShutterBug sees in a frame.

Camera GUI and Render Progress Polish

  • Polished the camera settings GUI.
  • Mode and filter controls now support clearer forward/backward cycling.
  • Exposure now steps through nicer photographic stops from 0.125x to 4.0x.
  • FOV and size changes refresh the viewfinder preview.
  • Added animated render progress in the action bar while photos are rendering.
  • Reworked help output so /sb help shows current camera settings, paper cost, album progress, and available commands.
  • Added configurable wiki link support through /sb wiki.

Renderer and Model Improvements

  • Fixed chest rendering with real Java Edition chest geometry.
  • Added proper support for single, left, right, trapped, and ender chest variants.
  • Added real bed rendering with head/foot parts, colors, facing, and texture mapping.
  • Fixed HQ4 transparency/depth artifacts.
  • Improved cutout alpha handling for leaves, plants, rails, doors, trapdoors, vines, crops, torches, ladders, iron bars, candles, and similar partial blocks.
  • Improved villager and zombie villager rendering with biome/profession texture layers.
  • Improved several entity models/textures including drowned, stray, sheep, pigs, saddled pigs, cows, ghasts, magma cubes, mooshrooms, snow golems, villagers, and zombie villagers.
  • Improved player rendering with skins, armor, held items, head rotation, and posed arms.



Selfie Improvements

  • Selfies now respond better to camera pitch.
  • The selfie camera and posed arm adjust when looking up or down.
  • Player heads now face toward the selfie camera.
  • Improved left/right arm selfie support.

PNG Metadata and External Images

  • Exported PNG photos now include configurable metadata.
  • Metadata can include caption, photographer, creation time, render profile, FOV, exposure, filter, photo size, tile info, image size, world/dimension/time/weather, camera angle, and detected subjects.
  • Exact coordinates are private by default, but server owners can enable them.
  • Fixed PNG metadata export memory growth.
  • Added /sb photo give player image-url for creating a map from an external image URL.



Commands, Config, and Admin Polish

  • Added permission-aware command catalog and tab completion.
  • Polished command output with ShutterBug's sepia text style.
  • Added guide-url config support for public wiki links.
  • Added png-metadata config options.
  • Added album-recipe config options.
  • Improved album status/reset flows.
  • Improved reload behavior for config, language, recipes, and collections.

The documentation has been rebuilt into a public MkDocs wiki with screenshots and full guides for players and admins.

Testing and Stability

  • Added and expanded automated tests for camera settings, GUI behavior, command/help output, PNG metadata, render progress, album text, collection matching, frame evidence, deterministic captions, transparency/depth rendering, and bed model generation.
  • Improved stale async album render handling.
  • Improved deterministic ordering for captions and debug evidence.




ShutterBug is now much closer to a full photography progression system for survival servers.

Players can take photos, tune camera settings, collect album subjects, export PNGs, build galleries, and use the wiki when they need exact instructions.

83 Entity Models
Up from 20. nearly every mob, boss, and NPC now renders in your photos, including the Ender Dragon and Wither.
HDR Rendering
The renderer now works in floating-point HDR. Emissive blocks glow naturally instead of clipping to white, and per-pixel ACES tone mapping gives much better contrast in mixed-lighting scenes like torch-lit caves.
~60 Colored Point Lights
More than double the light sources. candles, amethyst, cave vines, fire, nether portals, and more. Multiple nearby lights now stack realistically thanks to unclamped HDR accumulation.
