Howdy all,

I've not kept up with updates to minecraft, so I had never played 1.13 or 1.14 before today, but I just started it up to play a bit because apparently the updates were pretty big.

minecraft is like a whole new game. From what I could see a huge majority of the textures were completely redone, there's new weapons, items, and blocks. I played for like 5 minutes in creative and then got overwhelmed with all of the changes and gave up.

https://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Java_Edition_1.14

Here's a list of all changes. There's like 9 new crafting blocks which is pretty weird to me.

Do you think Minecraft has lost its charm in recent years, or is it just because many of us have been playing it for so long?

Minecraft has lost its charm. It's not the same game we all fell in love with when we first started playing. I'm not saying this out of nostalgia either. The game doesn't have the same textures, it doesn't have the same combat system anymore, and the game has seemingly lost its simplicity. Hell they don't even call Minecraft just Minecraft anymore. You have to specify that you're on the Java Edition now pfft.

I was talking about this a little earlier in the shoutbox, but the charm of the game has been revitalized my recent introduction to VR with Multiplayer.
Virtual Reality by itself is quite interesting, if a little irritating when navigating interfaces, and I found myself not feeling all that compelled to come back to it after I exited. But it has really been unlocked by playing with friends. I have a few IRL friends who have VR headsets, so a few weeks ago we hopped on Discord and play Minecraft in VR together, and it's an amazing experience.

The closest thing I can compare it to is like if you had a LAN party while on a camping trip if that makes any sense? The element of creativity that sorta vaguely comes along with camping while the experience of gaming with friends all in one space.

If you ever get the chance to try multiplayer VR minecraft, I sincerely recommend it.

Agreed. When I see all the new stuff added to the game, it doesn't feel like Minecraft. It feels like it's been modded. The game has gotten too complicated to say the least

I feel that the old way of Minecraft was the best, maybe it's just my nostalgia talking. I don't think all of the additions past 1.8 were bad, but most, in my opinion, were too different/unsimplistic for me.

Minecraft is still simplistic. Minecraft is changing, yes but it has and always will remain to have its charm.

This forum suffers too much influence from a single generation. Since you grew up with it, you hope for it to remain the same and fear change. But in return, you call it boring. Furthermore, this forum functions as a major bandwagon for a lot of people (that's just group behaviour, nothing against this forum) and hence they all say the same.

Minecraft still has its charm, it will remain to grow (it's not dying) and yes, it is changing.

For one to fall in love again with Minecraft is to find something completely new and enjoy playing it for a while. You need to recreate amazing times so you can feel nostalgic about them again.

All people that are here think the game is dying because no replica of the same old (Faction, HCF, some minigames etc.) can compete with their nostalgic thoughts. If you want to feel the old times again, look for something completely new and revolutionizing that it makes you forget any link towards the past. Play it, a lot, and Multiplayer Minecraft will regain its charm and everything you think it once lost.

There updating everything but the only thing the community actually wants... The only reason I dont play much anymore is because Im stuck on 1.8 and tbh 1.14 looks sick . Im just really hoping that in 1.15 they actually deliver the one update that the community wanted

I honestly enjoy 1.14 coming from a guy who played the prime of 1.7/1.8 pvp (MCSG, HCTeams, Kohi, Badlion, etc). It’s very different and it doesn’t feel as simple anymore. Burnout was my main issue for MC during these days and it got addressed

Simplicity. When I started playing at like 1.6.4 I loved it. Absolutely had a ball with it. 1.7 and 1.8 came and went and then I just lost interest as most of us did. Now coming back to whatever the newest version is it just isn’t the same.

With fortnite, you miss a season or two because of school etc but you can still come back and have it be the relatively the same game, you know? Minecraft just doesn’t do the same thing for me. I miss it man, I really do

You don't know what "simplicity" means in game design? And you are saying this out of nostalgia...

See the inherent problem with people like yourself is that you automatically assume that because someone disagrees with your opinion about the current state of Minecraft they fear change and are blinded by nostalgia. People don't fear change as you put it, change isn't guaranteed to always be good. It can be either good or bad, it depends on the individual. Simply classifying anyone who doesn't like the new updates as being apart of a "bandwagon" is just the go to generic NPC line people use because they refuse to acknowledge many of the relevant points made by those who believe the game is not what it once was. How about instead of belittling the generation of people who made Minecraft popular in the first place you constructively argue the points made by those with a differing opinion and then.

PS: I have never been a fan of factions or HCF and I honestly would rather watch that toxic community burn to the ground instead of making a comeback.

Psychologically proven, people fear change especially when mixed with nostalgia or emotional feelings.
Nobody nor you ever provided constructive critcism why it's 'not simple' anymore. The game still used 2 mechanics and an incredibly simple but in-depth crafting system. The game is simple in terms of game design. It will forever be unless they start to add more combat styles etc. 6-year olds can play this game. It is simple.

Acknowledge which points? I haven't seen any come by.

MC isn't dying. It has never been bigger, the player base just shifted to other sectors (bedrock / marketplace / minigames). It is still the same game it once was? It's still Minecraft. An extra villager or two will not impact the game or change it beyond recognition. You are scared of change just by that one sentence even if you somehow try to disprove that.

You take pride in that you are supposedly the generation that made MC popular? Right, haha.

The new updates bring back a lot of older players who lost interest as Minecrafts content ran low. That's the reason why people leave Java. There is no new content.

And I've honestly yet had to encounter a true argument that proves anything besides some trendlines taken out of context.
