Hello, I ran a mc server for 2-3 years and ended 2 years ago. I made a good 20-30k during my run.

I was wondering if servers are still profitable and which game mode is the best to make money.

Thanks

Fucking hell so fucking toxic now a days i swear to god. Cause i have a different opinion on successfull you won't talk to me anymore... Kinda sad.
LOL
Or it is because you're being sarcastic and sad by saying you believe 20-25 playerbase is legitimately successful.
By that measurement, a 1 playerbase is successful. By "successful" we are talking about 200+ playerbase making consistent income per month and expanding itself with updates, proper management, Admin/Dev's under NDA or Contract, and possibly even being a legally registered business.
That, is being legitimately successful.

Besides "legitimately" successful networks, the measurement of success is actually just a measurement of meeting your own bare minimum expectations.

People say Factions is overdone and “oversaturated”. But honestly - put a few thousand in and if you’ve got a decent setup and it’s monetised with some large YouTubers then you’re all good to go.

To answer your question, nowadays “Hardcore Factions” seems relatively large however it’s dominated by MineHQ, Arcane and Velt (servers ran by ForzenOrb). Factions isn’t so dominated as well as Skyblock,
but I’d say for profit that Factions is the overall best.

Which game mode do you think is the most profitable in terms of the amount of effort I’d need to put in ? I used to run a factions server and thought factions was most profitable. Also in the past 2 years I now know java/python/c/sql so could possibly create some stuff myself.

Factions. People go P2W and with advertisements, you'd be set.

I own a 70 man faction, and have contact with many! Add me on discord @Ox8#8197 :)

I think we’re talking about a few thousand a month - not hundred.[DOUBLEPOST=1525074350][/DOUBLEPOST]
Skyblock is definitely better than factions, factions is pretty oversaturated.
It’s not a question of what’s “better”, it’s whats more profitable. Factions is defiantly more profitable.

A profitable Minecraft server is not hard to achieve, but profitable in most peoples eyes is enough to replace an IRL job, which is hard...

I own an HCF server and a Minigames server (both hosted in AU, which is a much different marketplace then US) and they both make money quite easily. IMO, there are a few different ways to run a server and they depend on what you want to achieve with your network.

1: Paying for a minecraft host. This is easy to get setup with and cheap, making you only need like $25 or so to make profit, which is easy if you are doing factions or have a good network.
2: Paying for multiple servers with a minecraft host (bungee). Still can be cheap, but usually means you are paying $50+ for a network. Only a good option if you already make that monthly
3: Dedicated host/VPS. This is once you need extra power / flexibility with what you can host gamemode wise. Can start costing upwards of $100+ a month.

Keep in mind that people make servers for passion and not just profit. Some don't have thousands of money's to spend on stuff. SO you can make "profit" quite easily but if you want to make good amounts of money be prepared to invest lots.

Anything really is profitable if the right team of people are running it. Also, I would personally look into doing something more unique than a standard factions or HCF server, there's already thousands and the community just doesn't need anymore

You DON'T NEED A BUNCH OF MONEY INVESTED to start a Popular and Successful server! Frankly, it's the reason why servers are legitimately SHIT nowadays!

How does more money make a server worse?

More shitty features that every server has created. I don't think servers made for money are fun, and creativity doesn't come from money being thrown at devs MOST of the time. More money can be positive, but just throwing a bunch of money out on a server expecting something big will only make it terrible

Factions isn't more profitable...
Yes it is. There’s so much more to offer and so much more competition which increases the player purchases. Plus it’s a way more popular gamemode.

I would recommend create your own custom gamemode, something the community has not seen before. If you do that correctly, you could beat the likes of hypixel etc. Minigames are dying.
