CloudFlare is designed for web services and when it comes to protecting you and your community it's quite handy since you can change the settings that you need to fit your purpose.

Actually, the ddos would impact CloudFlare's servers which can withstand a few GB and should work fine unless you have a serious hacker, the only difference is the options / features. Also, DDoS does not make your files go poof, however can mess up some minority items if it's hard enough.

Additionally, while CloudFlare does protect well, some software can still resolve your server's DNS on any plan and a upgrade won't help it. I've seen it happen before.

Cloudflare doesn't protect MC servers, it's for websites. Using it for your forum, would be a great idea. It's not just DDoS protection, it can also speed up your site, and save bandwidth.
Actually it can, it hides a server's IP address making it harder for hackers to DDoS the server. However, it doesn't prevent bot attacks.

Don't comment if you don't know what you're talking about. You don't loose files when you get ddosed...

ok sorry i said that stuff wrong but it can crash your website and make you lose files.

No, it doesn't make your files break much however it will slow down the connection and can cause your hosting provider to lock your website if it's budget. Additionally, using CloudFlare / Incapsula is a good system and it hides a website's IP address but it can still be resolved if enough time is taken. Also, a website doesn't quite "crash" much, a domain points to a IP address which is linked to a server, the server gives files to the client trying to access it, so unless it's clearly on low ram it won't crash if DDoSed, it just gets slow.

Id say yes. Wont give your server any protection, however it is one of the nicest easy to use domain manager out there. Once you setup your domain with the cloudflare name servers, it gives you a nice easy to use UI, that you can access all your domains from in the same place. In most cases it will also reduce the load on the server that your forum is hosted on and provide better response and loading times. Finally their always online feature would benefit you, if your forum was to go down cloudflare can keep a partiality functional site working from cache. Not all the posts will be visible, but players could still access the home page etc.

As it was mentioned a DDoS attack could cause you to lose files. If the attack happens while files are been uploaded to the server it is possible for those to become corrupt. But i cant see, if you are just hosting a forum anything of importance been damaged. Maybe a screenshot someone was uploading etc. The other way is that some hosting providers have been known to suspend / delete a service if it comes under repeated attack.

There are also some DDoS attack types designed to attack the CPU and memory, genreally by exploiting poorly coded sites and proxys / botnets to get the web server to perform a great deal of resource intensive tasks which depending on the site, available memory and amount of connections the attacker makes to the server, it is entirely possible to crash it. Though these kind of attacks arent really used by kids wanting to take someones minecraft forum down. So technically Keenan was correct in saying an attacker can crash a webserver and cause it to lose files, however failed to fully explain and i highly doubt any of this would happen.

That happens if you're too stupid to hide your back-end IP. If you do it properly, you can't get the back-end IP.

I currently use CloudFlare and all my A records have the 'Orange cloud' so you can't resolve it, however it is possible if sombody tries for a long period of time as I had one person get the domain on the lines of 5jduen.mc.example.net and that was resolveable but it wasn't not on my domain manager and never was.

If you keep resolving the same thing it will keep returning the same result. It will not magically, somehow, return what it goes to in the back-end. People can get your actual server IP through emails or accessible records or vulnerable sites, to name a few. Unpropagated changes can also be a reason, but it really depends on the circumstance if that's a factor.
