Hey,

It would eat a lot of power but not that much bandwidth. Also if you do host it at home. I'm sure there will always be those annoying people to DDoS you. It would use your IP address. Not sure about the electric cost. It think it would be better to co-locate it.

Have a nice day! ^-^ <3

You'd need to spend a fortune each day to make it work well, to the extent using a datacenter for $60/month is cheap :p

Hello im thinking of hosting a dedicated server at my house for a minecraft network but im not sure yet because i don't know much about dedi servers.

Do they need to be connected to my own wifi connection or does it have its own connection?
How much will it cost for electricity?
Is it worth it?

Im sorry if these are dumb questions but im wondering
I don't know much but I would think it's not worth it, from all issues you would get. I would just go with a company so you get support ect and would be easier for you and most likely cheaper

I use gaminghost.net but that's my opion they use the best stuff around

I have experience with this first hand.

I have 4 Servers hosted at my house, but I don't use them for anything critical.

1. They Will Require Ethernet and at least a 50/20 connection.

2. Depending on how many servers you have to expect your power bill to go up around $50 to $100 per server.

3. It's kind of worth it, if you convince your parents to get the internet connection, a few IPs, and pay the power bill you're pretty much straight.

Also, consider setting up a GRE Tunnel on a DDoS Protected Machine so you don't have to worry about hardware DDoS Protection. I recommend getting a rack and 3 Box Fans to keep the room cool.

I only have 1 Box Fan and as soon as I close the door it becomes a furnace because there is no AC in the room I have the servers in. Keep your servers in a totally separate room from where you sleep, you'll thank me. I've slept with my servers right next to me and I hated it.

It's affordable if your parents pay the electricity bill. Just do it, you'll learn a lot from it.

Depends on the power the server is going to pull do you know how much your parents currently pay per kWh? You'll need a pretty good uplink on your home connection to be able to handle any sort of DDoS attacks a basic Comcast (or whoever you use) connection wont do the job. You'll also need to speak to your service provider about what they allow on their network before starting anything at home last thing you want is your provider to boot you while running production at home.
i dont think the network provider will mind and i will ask for a bandwith upgrade etc...
As i said i get electricity for free because here in greece there is a lot of sun and i get a lot of free electricity
