You know that DDos protection is theoretically already in place (unless cloudflare was completely disabled, Mick ?)

CloudFlare was completely disabled(he said it was a waste of money), he said that he is using CloudFront now though (remember him saying that a few days after he took ownership)

well, same concept, I guess. Just a different service.

Idk what any of those 2 do, I'm just quoting what he said to answer your question xD
basically they're supposed to 'absorb' DDoS attacks. Any attack directed at the site will instead be redirected to them, where their servers are used to mitigate it.
They'll have a giant stack of servers, and the client pays for a certain max limit of absorbing power (say, 10 GB/s), and if it goes above that they let the rest go through.
So it's possible the max limit was lowered, so a strong DDoS attack can get through it.

https://aws.amazon.com/shield/

Problem solved, assuming the claims that "DDoS" is actually taking down the site are legit (which I'm suspicious of, to be honest - I feel like it's some configuration [human] error that the sysadmins aren't experienced enough to spot, but whatever).

CloudFront is AWS' CDN service, it isn't a DDoS protection service, as far as I understand.
AWS' DDoS protection service is AWS Shield.

CloudFlare does both, and more. But since Mick is hosting on AWS, it would make sense to use AWS' services instead.

These services are made for big multi-server systems and such, using AWS doesn't make much sense for a site like MCM, which isn't that big.
