I know its pok"é"mon for a start haha.

I'm getting a 3ds to play pokemon sun with my mates but I don't really know where to start. I have hardly any experience with pokemon, should I go into the game blind or should I buy some books or watch some of the show first?

Can you guys give me some tips?

Should I watch the shows, if so what ones? and how they will help me in game?

Should I collect the cards?

Should I play pixelmon?

IDK guys I just wanna fit in haha..

Here's a basic breakdown of every pokemon game:
1. You move into a new city with your mother 75% of regions include your father as one of the gym leaders who you look up to.
2. You meet a friend/rival that will challenge you along your journey.
3. A storyline of a rival team that tries to take pokemon for horrible uses.
4. Countless hours of grinding for high leveled pokemon.
5. A few "I Hate this fucking game" moments, due to continuously losing to a gym leader.
6. Making sure your friends don't cheats, as it's way to easy to cheat in any pokemon game.

Do I need to learn anything though, is this game friendly to new pokémon fans or ...

You've come to the right place my friend, I am ProfessorOak. [ ProfessorOak is the first professor from the first pokemon game]

Trying to understand pokemon without knowledge may be confusing, but you have to give it a go in order to like it! I've played pokemon ever since '96 versions, and for me I've never let it go since. For the shows, you don't need to watch them, just if you enjoy them, and same with everything else. I've collected pokemon cards, watched the shows, and played pixelmon, and thats just because i enjoyed doing so.

You can try an online emulation of an older pokemon game such as Emerald, Red, Silver, etc. to see if you like the "style" the game is played in. Of course the game you are going to buy would have much better graphics, but hey might as well give it a try.

Sun & Moon is friendly for beginners, showing what moves on your pokemon are immune, not-effective, and super-effective. For an understanding of types and how they work i prefer bulbapedia. This is more like an online guide, so theres no need to purchase any guide for pokemon, theres plenty free ones out there!

As for competitive battling, you can find easy setups and things on Smogon's strategy pokedex, but i prefer you not start competitive until you have a "grasp" of what the game is, and of course if you enjoy it.

For Sun & Moon you can go here to look at walkthroughs and pokedex if you buy the game but don't mind spoilers.

Its all whether you like the game or not! Give it a try and see what you think! If you have any questions you can pm me, Oak is always here to help trainers in need.

You don't need to watch anything or read about anything if you only want to play casually, there are some parts where you may get a bit confused or lost so you could always look it up but if you read the dialogue and understand everything then it'd be A OK. But if you want to play competitively then you'll need a LOT more information.

You don't have to do any of that if you don't want to. All I would recommend is learning the types and what is super effective on what. Some are common sense like water > fire, but then there's things like bug > psychic and dark > ghost etc.

Which game are you starting with? I've played and beat every game since pokemon blue for the gameboy. Out of all, pokemon sun is now my favorite as the story is amazing and the character development is great. If you're just starting out, it's a good game to begin with because it guides you through the basics when you start and there's always a flag where you have to go to which other games didn't have.

After you get a feel for the game, competitive battling is pretty fun as well. You can build teams on pokemonshowdown and battle with others online to see how good it is. Then you can try to recreate it in the game. For this though, you have to learn what IVs, EVs etc are. I just play on showdown though. They have their own regulated tiers to prevent annoying tactics like making every pokemon on your team fall asleep or spamming moves that increase evasiveness level.
