I pre-ordered Pokemon Sun on the first day possible and I was extremely excited to play! I looked into all the leaks up until release date, and did so much research and discussion about the game over other forums, reddit and twitter. When the game arrived, I decided to give it to my younger brother since I realized that I really don't have the time to play it. He is absolutely loving it and cannot put his 3ds down!

I've heard many great things about this gen and it's game including storyline and graphics. I've also heard about new formatting that allows for it to be more friendly for newer players (i.e. effectiveness info)?

Anyways, I've been a Pokemon fan since I was young (started watching the shows before I was 2 according to my parents), and I hope you enjoy this experience as much as I did playing 1st gen to 6th! :D

The first time I was introduced to pokemon was the platinum series.

I just played the game. You pretty much get the concept of it within 2-3 hours of playing. It's not a bad idea to watch the show alongside, it can be amusing and give you more insight on what Pokemon is!

As Mat and Doge said, typing is a key thing.

Learn what works well against each type. I've been playing for quite a bit now, and even went back to the originals (amazing things they were).

Some tips:

1) Don't Cheat.
2) Learn typings. (e.g Water > Fire, Ghost =! Normal etc)
3) Look into the future (what gym leaders are there, what types are the e4, what pokemon do they have, how can I counter this?)
4) Always start casual, never go into competitive knowing shit all, you want to become advanced first.
5) Get a team in your head, remember, any pokemon can be good if you know how to use it, it's abilities, it's moves, and compatible teammates. You don't want a team full of water pokemon, you want a good mix.
6) Adding on to the point above, look at dual nature pokemon. (e.g lanturn which is an electric/water, two "opposite" types) they can be gamechanging in battle. If you can make a team that covers as many types as possible, why having as little amount of weaknesses as possible, then you've succeeded.
7) Enjoy the game. That's the main point.

I had some fun as a younger child with Pokemon, especially watching the TV shows and playing Pokemon Black and White on the DSI XL. You should totally get into it if thats what you want to do. I suggest watching the TV shows and reading about Pokemon stuff on this website: http://pokevolution.com
