Recently got into a pretty nice discussion in the shoutbox and I think it would be pretty cool to hear how the game has affected peoples lives.

This sounds reallllyyyyy whack but let me explain it for you.

Ive played the game since August of 2011, I can say now I put in over 30,000 hours into this game (No kidding, literally that many), but now I am 18 I have not opened the game in 2 months, I mean I was literally addicted, I have become so much more wiser over the time after realizing the shit I missed out on during all that time, I thought I could make a career out of it multiple times and thats what kept me coming back for more. I have never had a problem with making friends and that wasnt a issue on why I played it vs doing things in my real life. also I have developed a weird passion of wanting a original name on any forum or website I sign up to. Oh and also the memes, I am so glad this game kept me around memes before they finally actually hit a spotlight on social medias and news stations in the past 2 years. I met some pretty damn cool people that I still talk to and some I hope to meet some day. Glad I played this game because im not surprised when I see cancerous content on the internet like most people either, ive talked to some literal tumors through this game lmao.

Whats your story?

I started playing the summer of 2010. Once multiplayer came out I would server hop. While on the servers I would build for them, I was decent for the time. I would build spawns, grand buildings, and the like. Once I had done some building I would quietly move on to the next server that needed a builder. After some time, I ran into someone who I shared several common interests with. We quickly became friends. He was a server owner, and he invited me to partner up with him and help run a server. We quickly became close friends. Since then, we have created 5 total servers. We have been friends for 5 years, he is one of my best friends. I had not actually met him in person until last month where I attended his wedding as his best man. From the servers we had ran together, I learned a massive amount of knowledge in running servers and making a business out of it. I uncovered a passion for business that I did not know I had until running servers. I am now studying for a major in Business and the income I make from my servers helps pay my tuition.

30k hours for 5 years? Either you are bullshitting, or you are a massive nerd living in parents basement.

30k hours is 1250 days, 5 years is 1825 days. 1825 - 1250 = 575 days. If you spend AT LEAST 8 hours going to school/work/whatever, then it's 608 days EXCLUDING SLEEP.

The only way to get 30k hours, is to play minecraft EVERY SINGLE DAY, for 5 years, and get 7 hours to sleep plus you have extra 30 minutes of free time to eat or take a shit every day.

And yes, I wasted around 5 minutes counting all that useless information.

I use to be super obsessed as well (maybe not 30k hours lol, but still spent a lot of my time on it).
Now I rarely play it, only on few occasions where I'll play with friends or help a friend on his server.
Aside from entertainment, last year I also started doing digital art, and mainly focused on drawing minecraft stuff. This led to me meeting some of the most amazing people ever including some of my best friends to this day. Of course it wasn't all sunshine and rainbows, I went through a lot of drama and stress because of things that had happened and people that I had met, but I think it's been worth it, especially with friends like Isaac (<3) to help me through it :p

I did not get a job till I was 16 lmao and I only worked weekends. You would not believe how much free time I have had over all this time, and you bet your ass I wasted it. AKA the reason why I regret it so much

It's given me:
  • Opportunities to work with many talented and creative people
  • Forced me to develop a strong understanding of Git, Maven, and various other technologies/platforms that I'll use in my CS career
  • An incredibly deep understanding of the Java language
  • Being self employed and paying off my university loans from freelance/server income
  • The luxury of not having to work a normal 9-5 job and having a very flexible schedule
  • A massive boost to my GitHub and public portfolio

Thanks so much Tech <3

Although I no longer play the game and have not for more than a year, I'll put in my two cents.

Minecraft changed my life. I wasn't allowed to play online games or interact with people I didn't know for years, and then I was allowed on a Minecraft server called MCGodWorld which completely changed my life. I met so many people who turned me into the person I am today. I used to play every day for like, 2-3 hours and I just loved it. After about a year of playing with real life friends and not actually understanding how to chat or anything (shh, I was like nine), I learned how to communicate with the outside world and actually meeting people from GodWorld. When I joined, they had already been open for about a year, and had developed one of the tightest and friendliest communities ever.

I'm gonna cut a five thousand word story down to this, I eventually joined the forums and applied for Moderator, and I got denied every single time for 23 months straight before getting accepted. By the time I was accepted, my application was 1,500 words long, and I had become best friends with just about every one of the god damn hundreds of people in the community. Even though I ended up getting demoted a month later (for a stupid reason may I just say) it taught me a HUGE amount. I learned how to write applications by the time I was 12, and I had learned grammar and spelling to a high level. When I had joined, I didn't know what a paragraph was, or when to use a pause/fullstop (,/.) but I learned this from GodWorld by just posting stuff, and people would help me correct it. By the time they reset the forums and eventually closed, I had racked up 1000 forum posts, and gotten to a really high WPM (sadly lost this 100 or so wpm now due to being lazy)

Minecraft has also lead to my primary interests now, which are web design/development, coding, and digital art. I have gotten a job as a web designer where I am earning what all my friends my age are earning at cafes and stuff, and I can do what I love.

Thanks Minecraft.

It made me realize how sad my life was for me to be playing a game designed for 12 year old cancerous fucks.

A way to waste money. Atm I work all day finishing orders on MCM to pay for my Minecraft server...why do I have a 3gb server for a server which only uses 500mb and another 3gb for a BungeeCord...I want to start a hosting company, but how can I when i'm forced to use all the $ on my own server and can't pile $ up .-.
