So just today I got into an argument with my mom. She claims I do not have a job and make 0 money and completely rely on her (Which is not true) and makes the bold claim how I get everything I want (Which is not true either).

A good bit of my income comes from freelance work for random servers every day. More of my income comes from servers I am contracted with to develop stuff for.

A lot of the money I use is completely from me that I actually worked for.

She claims that developing for Minecraft is not a job, nor do you actually know anything cause it's a game and you cannot make any money off it, nor are you a "Real developer" (Note: She developed for HTML, a markup language, for 1 year, so I don't know how she got this claim), which once more, is not true. Granted, there are a lot of fake developers in this community (I can name a few), but at the same time, there are also real developers who actually took the time to learn the language.

What do you guys think though?

Edit:
By the way, I am 19 years of age, I do make my own money and technically I can move out to live on my own as I can. My family just doesn't want me to so I can save money for college and use it to pay my expenses.

We can't say anything without knowing how much you actually make.

And I don't think any of us really care.

I think you COULD keep doing what you're doing, but look into the skills you have and apply them to other fields of computer science, make a more reasonable income. I know for a fact you will not be living off of the money you make for more than a few months. If you do, bravo, but I'd love to see what happens in the next two or three years.

I personally think that coding is a skill of being able to research and learn. Once you master that, you are a real developer. That’s what matters.
Knowing you, you are extremely competent however in the past couple months you’ve been... limiting yourself. Push yourself beyond limits and I can assure you, no matter what people say you’ll know you can accomplish crazy things.

Developing for Minecraft is a job yes, to a certain extent. If you receive a steady income of cash and have work to do at a constant flow then yeah you basically have a job. If you rely on this however, look into other fields and challenge yourself and don't limit yourself just to Minecraft development because it is only so limited here. Look into other development fields that apply to what you already know.

By the fact that you added 'developer' in the title as a requirement, it kind of shows you expecting a specific answer in your favor of the argument. Putting that point aside, call it whatever you want - a job or a hobby - if you're making money then you're making money. I think the point your mother was trying to make is that if you're talented enough as a developer for minecraft, then there should be no reason not to branch out into a more professional environment by seeking an internship or IT job. The minecraft community isn't the most profitable and is often toxic. Your specific audience that seek a custom anti-cheat is incredibly small and most servers will settle for something cheaper to maintain a profit. So my point is that you should take it as a reminder that you can branch out as Java development goes far beyond minecraft. Before someone brings up the "its not a job if I love the work" argument, I address this already as it's not sustainable long term in a super neice market as Toon's in my opinion.

So here is my opinion:
Actually my situation is the opposite from yours, my mother understands the idea of making money online, she worked as a C++ developer for a company before I was born even though she does not work at this anymore, she ecourages me to make software and sell it since she knows this experience will make me a better developer and help my future as a high-tech developer

In the developer world expericence is everything, you code more = your a better developer, actually its better and more important then getting a degree, even though degree is also important and I plan on getting one too, but still experience is everything and its what companys actually want to see, you can be a really good student but it does not mean your a good developer, in the end people care about what you make, also what she defines a real job? I mean from knowing you I can say that compared to a lot of developers you actually make a good amout of money from coding plugins, widraw some of the money you make to your bank account and show her that you actually make money from this, once she see that you are not wasting time playing games and actually make a decent amount of money from this she cant say much I mean she cant deny that you have money in your bank, also explain to her that coding its like math, in math you solve more problems then you'll get better at solving problems, its the same with coding make more programs then you will get better at making them and once your a goof developer you will be able to finish your degree with better grades and with better grades and experience your will be able to find a job at a company more easily

All the time she thinks you waste playing games is actually time you invest in your career, your future career that will lead you to earn 100$ per hour while working in top conditions

It starts from making a monecraft plugin and seling it for 20$ and ends at making the new encryption Standard, like at every job people start small, I hope she can understand that the time she thinks you waste is just againing experience at the job you want to get in the future, of course if you plan on working as a professional programmer if not then its a different situation..

I mean do she thinks all of the big developers in the world started from making huge sofrwares like Photoshop?

Anyways my tip is:
1. Show her a proof that you actually make decent money from this
2. Explain to her that all this time you invest is not wasted
3. Explain to her the world of high-tech and technology and that there is actually a lot of money there and that all of the big guys started like you, with coding smaller stuff

I live in California relatively expensive unless your living in Texas or any other desert states It's relatively expensive to live in America if you make enough to live on your own show her how much you make and show her the effort you put into your freelance jobs and show her how much you put into your own work and how It actually can make a profit developing plugins and games.

developer is developer, you know java and thats that. by her logic anyone who codes with an api is not a real dev, because bukkit, spigot and paper all have api's for plugins, meaning your coding with an api. her that logic make no sense at all
