Hi, I would like to learn java to make plugins. I have a little bit of experience in python, but when I want to learn a programming language I most of the time give up after some hours. Does anyone know a place to start? Thank you in advance :)

Honestly, as cheesy as it sounds, learning the very basics through Codecademy is very helpful.
I learned primarily through YouTube tutorials (following a YouTube series), and once you learn the foundations its best to just simply make plugins as practice makes perfect.
It really isn't that difficult though :)
EDIT: Try to make sure you are developing good habits, however. Try to do things in the best and most efficient way possible. That's what separates experienced good developers from bad ones.

Hey Matz,

I highly recommend covering the basics first. After learning the basics on websites such as bluecreeper mentioned, you can start learning the spigot api itself. There are plenty of youtube tutorials on how to do certain things, such as event listeners, commands and much more. But the basics are extremely important!!

Thank you for the replies, I'll check out Codecademy since I've never heard of it.

The resources listed above are great. I would recommend that you, along with Codeacademy and other basic learning programs, to also start coding projects on your own (that are of interest to you). Learning the fundamentals are important, but so is applying that knowledge to your own projects.

I would suggest learning Java in general as this will benefit you significantly instead of perhaps dwelling into plugin development straight off. I would suggest use a site like Udemy as they have lots of courses that cover absolutely everything you need in terms of Java or any other language :) hope it helps.

Just gonna say this now, Don't waist money on some premium course. you can learn fully on your own by reading documentation and asking questions to people that already know how to code. all you will really learn from a course is how to copy code

Here's a pro tip, If you want to learn java. From top to bottom and learn everything you ever need to code plugins. Read a book called Head First Java and practice lots. I didn't finish that book and I'm a decent amateur developer and have made a few hundred $ here.
