Is a 6000x6000 world supposed to be 7GB?

I set the border at 6000 blocks and pregenerated the world using WorldBorder (/wb fill) and now my world is at 7GB and is quite annoying to backup.

Is 7GB a normal file size for a world of this size? Or have I done something wrong?

As someone who generates quite a lot of maps for people, 7GB is a typical size for a 12k map (-6,000 to 6,000). Usually the 10k maps I do with a border at 5,000 come out at 5GB ish. Although the file size can vary depending on the terrain, 7GB is well within the expected parameters for a 12k map.

A bit of compression is used when saving the worlds, but with a border at 6,000 from the middle, that’s 12,000 x 12,000 and a world height of 256 is 36,864,000,000 blocks. That’s a lot of individual blocks to save the data for, hence the large file size.

Thanks so much for the reply, this is really helpful.

I actually just used ClearLagg to unload some of the unused chunks using /lagg unloadchunks and the file size fell to 3.5 GB, would this have any affect on the world or server performance? As I think i've just unloaded all the pregenerated chunks from WorldBorder. If this is the case, should I just use /wb fill 6000 again or not?

Also worth noting if you do have a pretty big border size, might also be worth doing /wb trim (will trim outside of the border of the chunks generated) may take a bit of time to achieve but it will also help in the long run.

My world is 8000x8000 and my file size is 5.5gb
