Hey guys I had a question that can have multiple answers, but is making a server in these times worth it? I've owned fairly successful servers in the past that were Faction PVP but this was over the years back when Minecraft was really booming, just curious.

No, making servers is not worth it at all, unless you have a couple thousands to spend.

Not unless you have unique ideas/features that will make your server stand out

Some of these comments above are funny. You don't need to spend thousands on development if you know what you're doing and how to set stuff up yourself. I'm still a server owner as I know how to fix things when there are bugs etc, I have money to spend if I want an idea made for a plugin. There is a part of advertising which is helpful if you have contacts and I agree you do need quite a bit of money but on the first map of a server you don't need thousands on advertising in my experience.
Why would anyone join your server if it's not different from others?
You need to spend Money on custom plugins if you want to make a successful different server.
And Development is not cheap.

I have to disagree with all of the 'no' answers.

Making a generic minecraft factions server will get you no where, there are servers like CosmicPVP and the Archon for those kinds of things. Same with minigames (Mineplex and Hypixel) but the majority of people don't realise that if you work on your server for a long period of time and make it unique it gains a player base on its own.

You may even want to debate on going into the Modded Minecraft community! Its a lot of work but sponge is picking up some serious heat right now, that will closely follow by a chain of hungry kids wanting new mods.

I made my server get 50+ people originally without spending more than $10/month on the hosting. I didn't even have a website to begin with, we used a google form for staff applications lol.

EDIT:

Not always true :)

Nowadays it's hard to think of unique ideas but depending on the type of server, players play regardless of the features just because it has a cool name or reputation from before. One of my first servers had 0 custom plugins, all from spigot the only premium plugins I had were featherboard and cratesreloaded ad I made a decent amount of money from it

Having original ideas for servers are great but they are hard to come by and can become very expensive to act upon. Take a look at your competitors, join their community and see what they are NOT doing or are doing wrong. Recreate and fix those problems and they will soon find a way to your community over another.

NOTE: this does not mean that you should spam servers with your server. Its just a statement explaining that spreading a server name can be done via friends and word/mouth instead of spending a shit ton.

Don't just jump in and try and make a server off the bat. Plan everything out, try out different things and see what works best for you and your suggested player-base. (Example: Don't make a Factions server and expect a nice friendly creative community - Never gonna happen..)

Basically to sum all of this up. If you know what your doing, definitely start a server. If you don't know what your doing, don't start one.
