Is Minecraft dying?

Well, if you looked into how many views Minecraft accumulates on YouTube too, it isn't decreasing in views. It is consistent with it's current view total per month while dominating the YouTube Gaming scene.
LOL, but seriously though minecraft seems to be retaining it's popularity. It's just more younger kids play it plus there's also PE, PS edition and Xbox edition.
You won't believe how many threads I've seen with this over the past 2-3 years that I've been active in the minecraft community.
No, minecraft is not "Dying". It's changing, evolving, as are its players.
How many of you, around the time of the official release, could have imagined the things that are being done in vanilla with commandblocks right now.
How many of you could have imagined the sort of structures and awesome builds that we see now.
How many of you, honestly, could have expected that there would be a buildteam that made things in minecraft on the order of large real life companies?
I, for one, could not. And I doubt many of you foresaw it.
I have no idea what minecraft will be like in 1 year. I can't even predict what minecraft 2.0 will look like. Heck, I have barely begun to speculate on the many additional possibilities of 1.9.
As for losing playerbase, eehm, no. The amount of people buying it may have declined a little, but half the younger kids I know (and I know about 30) play it or want to play it. They might end up replacing those of us that retire from minecraft.
The playerbase may change, but since there is a younger generation still playing the hell out of minecraft, I don't think its going anywhere in the next few years.

To be honest, I'm expecting Mojang to start working on making these platforms, if not cross-compatible, at least migrateable after 1.9 is done and the other platforms have caught up.

Single player? It doesn't matter what you heard, look here.
Just because people stop buying Minecraft (they're not...) doesn't mean it's dead. Many people who buy the game consistently continue to play the game after purchase. Many of the players that have been playing the game for so long have a sense that Minecraft is "dying".
Statistically speaking, no. It will die eventually, just like everyone posting on this forum.

I don't encounter these "lots of people" very much. In my entire 3 years in minecraft, I've encountered maybe 3 dozen people that play cracked minecraft on numerous fora and other communities, as well as in real life.
I have encountered many hundreds (encountered meaning I've had some sort of interaction with them) of people that play official minecraft.
I think for the 20 million minecraft copies that have been sold, there are maybe just barely 1 million people playing on cracked. Many of those are doing so because there are reasons they cannot buy official minecraft, since cracked requires quite some effort (hamachi servers are bloody annoying).
I think by now, we can easily assess minecraft by the lines of any other MMO with a large player base, though minecraft will always be a little different,
Can anyone tell me how long Runescape lasted before it pretty much died? I was too young at the time to pay much attention to it.
Apart from that, we have the world's best-known example of an MMORPG, which is World of Warcraft. Only in the past few years has it started to become more static, failing to attract large amounts of new players (Which is probably why blizzard started expanding on their games). I think it may have dominated the world of MMO's for a decade before that began. I personally expect Minecraft to last until 2020 before it becomes obsolete. Why? because the community can do almost anything mojang won't do.
Need better graphics? shadermods.
Nicer textures? custom resourcepacks?
Want a bigger variety of mobs? Use mods, or even just a clever combination of plugins and custom resourcepacks!
Want a new gamemode? hire a competent dev (or team of) and a few builders for the maps. There's your gamemode!
So many things have been invented in the few years since minecraft was officially released. And with 1.9, the potential continues to grow, despite the fact that the full potential of 1.8 has not quite been exhausted yet (though I expect it will nearly be by the time 1.9 comes out).
If mojang continues to supply potential for mapmakers and server owners, minecraft will continue to exist, and to evolve.
In my country there is a saying that translates into english as "standing still equals going backwards". It's aimed at the way the world constantly changes, and trying to remain unchanged will mean you remain behind.

pretty much everyone on this site was 10-14 when they started playing Minecraft lol because most of the community is 14-16

To some degree I feel like most of the older players now that are quitting are being quickly replaced by a younger audience. I don't know about you guys, but I think there has been a large increase in the number of younger players in the past year or so. Because of this I feel like they will keep the game alive.
