Alright this might be REALLY obvious
If you are starting a server or developing one, take this as a advice for your server
If you are making factions, survival or any other gamemode JUST please keep in mind that every single server has that. If your server has nothing unique to offer then that's whats killing your server.
You need to find ideas for your server SOMETHING unique AND NO I am not talking about custom plugins that is the same as others (example. shop gui, kit gui )
make the gameplay it self unique and fun, something that will grab the players attention and stand from all the other servers. Like look at hypixel HAVE ANYONE thought about making a skyblock server with the similar idea as hypixel? No. I get that hypixel is already popular but its still growing. What I am saying is make your server unique and stand from all the other servers.

Also not forget to mention. If you guys are gonna be like LOOK AT INVADEDLANDS IT HAS NOTHING UNIQUE AT KITPVP OR OTHER GAMEMODE
Well you know why it's popular?

11 year old fan : OH MY GUD HE HAS SERVER
2 second later
skeppyfan11 joined the server
NOW LET ME WASTE ALL MY GODDAMN TIME IN INAVDED LANDS AND WISH TO GET TROLLED BY SKPPY YAYAYAYAY

That's why.[DOUBLEPOST=1562511601][/DOUBLEPOST]It doesn't matter how long you have been working on the server and wishing it to grow. You have to THINK on how to make it successful, make it unique and fun. Don't give up. You will one day get there.

I thought this is obvious & basic advice? Making your server is unique is like, how to be an owner 101. Yet, most people don't follow that advice, because it's a lot easier said than done.

It's pretty obvious that your server has to be fun and unique you know?

Making a server at this point in time without a 100% unique idea is a complete waste of time and money.

not 100% true. Didn't MCBR flop, even though it was unique and shit?

Was that even that unique of a server? If it’s the server I remember it wasn’t anything anyone else hadn’t already thought of.

It probably flopped because people would rather play actual Fortnite instead of an imitation.

ye, but it stills goes to show being 100% unique doesn't always mean it'll get you out there

Let's be real.
Even though it's all unique, would you rather player fortnite block or real fortnite?

I know where you're coming from Aoid but I don't think that you're as familiar with this topic as you might believe. It is actually much more difficult to grow a server that is different from one that a player might already know how to play. Networks especially just don't pop up in a successful way anymore.

Start small, start simple. Make a solid foundation from a good quality product. It doesn't need to be unique, just quality -- simple.

Competition comes from doing something better than another, and sure while creating your own area where competition doesn't exist is great - consider the possibility that competition isn't there for a reason. Players don't like to learn new things, especially on an old game.

Although I agree with some stuff you said, I also disagree. I seen some servers basic as every other one, pull 20+ players. I've also found that establishing a community before launch is better than trying to build one when it's released. Unique servers aren't guaranteed a player-base either. With that being said, I would say professionalism is a must, but I've seen kids acting immature as hell pulling in players.

Pulling player's while unprofessional kinda triggers me.
Since you mentioned that you cannot build a community while it's released is also true. I agree.

It pisses everyone off. I never said it's not possible to build a community once released, I just feel it's harder, which makes zero sense. I see servers hyping the server up like no tomorrow, getting players upon launch but weeks later, they die. Minecraft isn't a good game to invest in unless you have atleast $1,000 saved, just for advertisement.

Honestly, your server doesn't have to be massively unique, just high quality (like TellTale said), You can have a generic skyblock setup but with some effort in making it high-quality, it can go way further than many other servers.

A lot of people try to push the idea "be unique" but fail in other primary things such as having high-quality setups and good overall player experience. It's good to have what other servers have since they've been in the server industry for so long that players expect it. (but not copying, obviously -- e.g playervaults, auctionhouse etc)

Once you've started a community, you can start adding your own big unique twists to the game, imo you're better off saving that money for advertising when you start and having a high-quality setup/player experience instead.

Exactly. Just because it's unique, doesn't mean it's going to pop off. To save yourself time and money, make a server, get a community rolling and go from there. Add the unique ideas later, a good idea isn't going to be cheap.
