Exactly. Just because it's unique, doesn't mean it's going to pop off. To save yourself time and money, make a server, get a community rolling and go from there. Add the unique ideas later, a good idea isn't going to be cheap.
$200 can get you pretty far tbh. I've noticed there aren't many SMP/semi-vanilla servers, so I'm currently working on one packed with features. Considering there isn't much competition for it, it'd likely be easier for me. Instead of being extremely unique, just find a gamemode with little competition and add a slight twist to it.

$200 for advertisement? Not likely. That hardly pays for server startup alone. Unless you want to go cheap and get low quality servers, logos, builds and more - then maybe it'll take you far.

I launched a server startup that's rather successful for $37. You just have to be smart, look for alternatives and especially never go with what everyone else recommends.

$37? Care to present it?

First impressions are everything. Personally, I'd never play a server with builds, logo, setups that came from the internet, it doesn't show creativity or effort. With that being said, a custom quality logo easily ranges above $35.

Same here, I've spent around $50 developing my factions server, you may ask, "how does it compete against others", and the answer is - it doesn't.

We would rather focus on the community more than profit gaining, yes profit is a need to cover costs (made around $400, profit wise $200), however most server's don't listen to the community whatsoever & sometimes you can't listen all the time, because they don't know how things work and don't know the process of how each owner puts a feature in (whether it's just putting it in and leaving it or actually configuring it and excessively testing it).

You don't need a unique idea to make a successful server, for example ViperMC released Exodus realm, with all the hype, we thought it would be amazing, however it was boring, their was nothing to do, it was just pvp + raiding. VanityMC is the leading(?) factions network, however they have many twists to their gamemode such as tokens for upgrades, backpacks, named stuff which are confusing, which is where my point comes in, new players won't be bothered in playing Vanity, unless they're in a settled faction, this is because, people will not be bothered learning how the server works and the mechanics behind it, unless they have played the first time it came out, or as again, they're in a settled (top) faction. Which is why they would go to a different faction server, where it's the same old. Let's just face it - minecraft player's are lazy.

I don't know if this made ANY sense, but my point is that you don't need a unique idea to make a successful server.

Sure. When entering into business it's always a good idea to be smart about everything you're doing. Worry less about trivial things and more on the practical.

The first thing to consider is that at the very forefront it should all look professional. I used resources that are not popular, or perhaps well known. I'm no artist, so I used tools available online and applied what creativity I do have to creating the branding logos and graphics for my server. In addition the name is simple, catchy and unique. The most important thing (I think) is the name and securing the domain names for that name, as it shows some bit of professionalism and is appealing to new users.

When it comes to creating a server I can fly around configuration files and handle all that in no time. As for building and things of that nature, I again: fall back on "what will make the most profit" in least amount of time but give the most fun. I loaded up planet minecraft, set the year to 2012 and found a suitable spawn for my projects. It was free to use for commercial purposes and had only 27 downloads. This saved me hours of my time, and at the forefront no one will really notice, or care.

I used source code available for plugins that I needed to update them appropriately and get them running for my server, although I didn't really need to put that much effort into it.

Used the free namelessMC software to setup a website, for news and updates.

I use discord as it's a free and popular communication tool.

I pay roughly $20 for my server hosting.

Total expenses so far is $37. Total reoccurring expenses is $22/mo.

Gross income so far:

Profit: 61.55

Overall, a server doesn't need to be super expensive.
