Minecraft Server Help

To begin with I have no idea where to post this, so if you need to move this thread, admins/mods, go for it.

OKAY!
I am in the process of making a minecraft server and for some unknown reason my messages_en and config's chat are not working. Actually, the only thing that is NOT working is when someone chats, the format it comes out in. I have EssentialsChat installed (from spigot) so it should be working. I tried resetting the config and removing the messages_en but neither one is working D:

Use the messages.properties file.

Do you mean messages_en.properties? If so, I have already tried that.. D:

NOT messages_en.properties.

Essentials uses the messages.properties by default.

There isn't a messages.properties...?

you don't even know how to edit the files lol.

I do know how to edit files. I've done it for years actually, I have taken a break though and I have just returned so if you could help me out rather than complain about what I can and can't do that'd be great

You have to open the jar file with WinRar.

You do not need to open a Jar file to edit the messages... I never have in my 2 years of making servers...

Dude there is a difference between a FILE and a JAR. I use files to do this, and half the time editing the Jar is against the law. So why do it that way?

I am done helping you... this is something you should be able to figure out on your own. I've done everything for you, gave you all the pieces. Just read my replies above.

Dude, I hope you realize that the messages.properties and messages_en.properties look EXACTLY the same. The output should be this
{NAME} -> {MESSAGE}
But instead its
<{NAME}> {MESSAGE}

In other words, I've already tried what you're telling me to do, its not working.

this is in the config.yml for Essentials

Did you not read it? I put it in the config. Its not changing anything.
