When I try to connect using the host, username (the one multicraft gives you), password and port I get an error.
Error: Authentication failed.
Error: Critical error: Could not connect to server
Status: Disconnected from server

You using the admin username with the server id, So like admin.3?

To be more specific the server runs and lets me connect. I have tried using no port so the default, tried port 21, and port 22. The username was admin.1

Could you put the exact error message again.
Also check that port 21 is open using this website: http://www.yougetsignal.com/tools/open-ports/

What OS are you using? Best thing to do is open the port then try again.It is saying closed
Ubuntu 16.04
Install ufw and do ufw allow 21
Try opening port 21, Not great on Ubuntu but try something like this
sudo ufw allow 21/tcp
You have to install ufw on ubuntu.
