Don't read if you don't care.

I've come to the realization that almost every new server and some old servers don't even try to innovate and improve the server market. In my most humble opinion, most new servers now are just low tier slop or a carbon copy of a "popular" minecraft server. I'm starting to think that maybe the only reason why people create servers now is to pretty much just "pump and dump" them. I've seen so many servers on BBB get sold after just 1 release with barely any work put into them (which I can understand since you're going to sell it anyways).

My theory is that people now adays purchase a setup, tweak it to make it unrecognizable from the original, try to hype it up with a discord server and other free ways to market, have 1 release to get donations and then sell it to maximize their profits, rinse and repeat. It is no longer about creativity or forming a community that enjoys the work they put out. I can't be the only one who thinks this either.

It's very rare to see a truly UNIQUE server these days and I have yet to see one besides from Origin Realms, some people will say this server isn't unique since the idea of better survival already exists, but my point is I haven't seen any other server like this. WynnCraft is another.

People will say things like; their server is fully "Custom" or "Unique" when in reality it is just a sloppy low tier temu version of another server. They pay for plugins that already have free versions out on other platforms that do exactly what they're looking for just so that they can call their code unique and custom to be able to capitalize more when they inevitably sell the server.

The word "Custom" is used so heavily to the point where it demeans it. They use this word like it's some kind of "magic word" that instantly boosts profits and their playerbase. Anytime I see a server say their slop is "Custom" I automatically know that it's not custom and it's just another temu copy given how many of these server owners use this "magic word" to try to promote their server to cultivate a broader audience.

I fully understand how hard it is to create, popularize and fund minecraft servers and how hard it is to make it in this sphere but, the bottom line is that there is no creativity left in this kind of work from what I've seen from so many new server owners.

Most Minecraft server owners nowadays often don’t have the capital. These servers usually start off cheap, and their owners tend to have the mindset of making their server super big and popular. But they’re not even considering making it fully featured—something that’s advanced and actually playable. There are a hell of a lot of SMPs out there, and this oversaturation overshadows many other aspects of Minecraft, which is supposed to be a fun game with endless possibilities. Nowadays, when people hear “Minecraft,” they mostly think of SMPs—not servers built around minigames or custom experiences like Wynncraft or Origin Realms.

I have to admit—even to myself—that some of these “fair bit technical” people eventually need to find ways to earn money or support their family’s household with a few euros.
They can make a bit of money, especially when they’re younger, and if they earn enough, sure—it won’t come close to the thousands being spent on serious servers, but it’s a start. They could set up a Minecraft server for a few friends and make something unique. The opportunity is there. Unfortunately, most kids don’t see that as a valid starting point.

As you grow older, there comes a time when people fade away from Minecraft and go their own way in life. That’s just how it is. But if we look at games that do stick around longer in people’s lives—take Nintendo 3DS games, for example—they were played in families and with friends. That’s the kind of spirit Minecraft server creators should revisit. You can absolutely use models and resource packs to make a fun Super Mario Bros–style game, but it takes time. And most kids nowadays want easy money. They think they don’t have time to build the server of their dreams (even though they actually do).

This leads to rushed SMPs with no identity, no polish, and no longevity—just more noise in an already oversaturated space.
And sadly, this applies just as much to minigame servers and custom (resource pack) servers.

I’m currently working on a high-quality, fully playable Minecraft server concept. We’re specifically looking for a Dutch COO with a technical background—someone who understands both the dev side and the chaos that comes with managing creative Minecraft projects. Bonus points if you’re a chill, humoristic person we can laugh with while building something awesome together. A lot of people underestimate what goes into a project like this—we’ve already invested a significant amount in builders, developers, and freelancers to make sure it’s done right.

I definitely agree with your point, but I am actually working on a runescape-minecraft mix, and I'd say it's extremely complicated to juggle everything on my own (development, marketing, discord, homepage, lore, map, etc...)

I'd say a solid 1.5-2 months progress, considering that I am combining this with my full time job, hopefully can finish it before i burn out :D

This is a thread if you are interested in following my little dev blog.

I'm coding a completely new gamemode , it takes time as a solo dev. I could do with some support even if its verbal T_T. Everything i've done 90% is custom except for of course established plugins that dont need to be coded

I completely agree with this. Doesn't feel like anybody is trying to innovate. I have an idea for a server that I think would work really well unfortunately I have no idea how to code.
