You get reputation from doing deals with actual money. You can't tell someone to give you either positive or negative, either.
Why would they give negative vouches if I help them with something for free.

A vouch is different from a positive reputation.

Also, that's just the rules. If you do a deal with someone and they pay you - then and ONLY then are they able to give you rep (positive, negative or neutral). You can ask for reputation in one of these deals, but can't hint at it being positive/negative/neutral.

I think this is right. Justis Doge

Did you read this in my post above?
If you think that it meant to leave an actual positive reputation then you are wrong, it just means that they leave a simple vouch.

The reputation system measures your community reputation, not trade reputation. It's not limited to business deals; because we are unable to verify deals. As the last rule states, they are for the community to express their opinions about users within.
So no, you don't need to do a deal first.

However, you are correct that reputation cannot be used as a reward/condition/currency.

REPUTATION SYSTEM RULES
The following rules apply to the use of the reputation system on MC-Market
9.1 Do not give reputation which is not constructive and informative. Example: “User is dumb” or “Vouch. Cool guy”.
9.2 Do not accuse members of scamming without linking a scam report on that member which you have started.
9.3 Do not hint, tip, or request a specific reputation rating on yourself or another member.
9.4 Do not use reputation as a currency, reward, or condition.
9.5 Do not abuse the reputation report system. This means you shall not attempt to report reputation unless it violates the above rules. Reputation is otherwise handled by the community, and is there to gauge the community’s opinion of you. If someone has a negative opinion of you, and you wish to improve your reputation, it is your responsibility to improve their opinion of you and therefore your reputation via communication with the reputation author.

I highly suggest everyone read the rules page before proceeding further on this site:
