The payment would be to cover the liability, so free middlemen shouldn't be an option. Would the OMMs be subsidized by the site? I wouldn't think so... this really just wouldn't work out...

Community appointed official middlemen isn't a terrible idea and deserves fair consideration.

I suspect a majority of the community would expect the service of an "official middleman" to be free, which I'm sure there are some people that would be willing to do that. If that's the case, then this is doable.
