"true statement" rather arrogant of you, taking the I'm right no matter what anyone says approach. Despite the matter been an entirely opinion based, so there is no right / wrong. Some Irl things don't help you in later life, having this conversation now, wont help you in later life. But your still doing it. If having the virtual items makes someone feel good, or happy to have them. Then they have served a purpose. Just because they are virtual doesn't mean they are meaningless. I'm sorry if you cant or want to see that.

Simple. They're always taken, there's always someone who wants them and they're short, simple and just look nice. Same reason people buy cosmetic items for anything really, just that these are digital. Many would like to have their own irl name or just a shortened version of their alias but it's always taken, so they look to buy it from whoever has it. Or one may just want something short that looks nice. When everyone else has some long name with numbers, you stand out.
And in terms of social media it's an even bigger thing. Having a short, simple recognizable @ for companies is huge. I know Nine sold @ Clear on twitter to a flight wait time shortening company known as "Clear Me" for around 2k. And Jordan sold @ Paris on instagram to a paris tour company for 3k I believe. Then there's people who just have them for the same reason but for personal use. Like the rich Saudis who pay big bucks for one character insta/twitter handles. It's like digital luxury items for them.
So it isn't like an in-game item which you can have an infinite amount of. It's something that represents your online presence and many will want it to be something nice and simple that gets noticed. You personally may not care about what your name is, but there are many who do and with there only being so many good OGs for any medium on the market, they go for a good amount. Low supply + High demand = $$$. A perfect example of this are MC OGs. After Feb 4 2015 name change day, OGs were everywhere and you could buy a name which would now be considered a super OG for $20-$50. Over time, they became more scarce. Then on top of that many accounts were sniped on unmigrateds resulting in them being locked, thus further lowering the supply. And now with less names being changed, there are less names being sniped but still many people want them.
