Hello,

Recently I have noticed an increase in smaller servers/bigger networks being crashed until the crasher gets paid a fee to stop the attacks.
Not a lot of smaller servers understand how to patch this, even some bigger servers don't have the protections against this so I am here to share some useful information I learnt when it comes to protecting against server attacks.

In-Game Exploits/Bot Attacks

When it comes to in-game exploits or bot attacks. A lot of servers will just IP Ban the user from the game. However, this isn't very useful as they can easily be bypassed by a VPN and continue to attack the server until they are paid their fee.

A good way to protect against exploits is by using a plugin such as ExploitFixer (Free on spigot) as this helps patch some of the more known exploits that clients will use to crash your server.
You can also protect against bot attacks by using an AntiBot plugin (I have linked 2 below), these require users to reconnect after a few seconds to verify that they are a legit player. If they cannot complete the verification, they will be blacklisted on the server and will appeal in your discord.

DDOS Attacks

These types of attacks have been on the rise for a while now, but I have noticed them happening on smaller servers where they do not have much protection against DDOS attacks.
Most hosting providers will provide you with free protections, but it's always good to add extra protection if you are using a custom domain (www.server.com)

If you are using a custom domain, or even just a normal IP address. I recommend using a service such as cloudflare as it offers some great protection.

Lag Machines (Redstone)

Redstone lag machines have been around for a while and are the most common way to crash a server. They are also really easy to defend against.
Simply install AntiRedstoneClock (Any other redstone timer prevention plugin works) and configure it to your liking, as other servers might want to allow more redstone than smaller servers.

There isn't much information in this thread, but it should help you protect a majority of attacks that are widely used. If you require assistance setting any of these up you can contact me via discord 52Devs#4361

Have fun playing!
