I'd like to see an actual reputation page on each user their profile. Hate to see how people compare rep to rating.
Here is how I was thinking about.

Normal members should be able to rep after 250 posts with +1 or -1

Members with a name colour should be able to rep after 250 posts with +2 or -2

Upgraded members should be able to rep after 250 posts with +3 or -3

And an actual vouch system instead of threads would be usefull as well.

Or. No trusted tags, add a reputation system if possible and keep ratings?
Sounds alright, show the ratings only when you click on an user their name, and show reputation off in posts where it says Messages etc?

My suggestion still stands: remove the ratings all together since verringer said they don't mean anything in the first place and removed the only useful one. Do keep the ability to rate a post but hide the total number under someone's name unless that's too much work. If it is too much work I would much rather have no ratings whatsoever than the current system because the current system is honestly by far the worst way of rating people I have ever seen on any website. Only two of the nine ratings (like and agree) are used completely non-sarcastically. Useful, informative, and <3 are used non-sarcastically maybe half the time, and the rest are only used sarcastically. Just change like and agree to fuck you and monkey feces and you have a full dislike system where the more ratings you have the worse of a user you are. People asking for a dislike system honestly need to quit asking because they pretty much already have one. Even that website that uses "scrobbles" as some sort of counting mechanism has a better system than this.

Hey, that's an idea. If you don't like the rating system and are tired of waiting for it to constructively change, why not only rate people when you are disliking their post? After all, its easier to separate out 2/9 good ratings than to try to rule out a person's total ratings aren't the result of receiving 7/9 of the possibilities.

Here's some translations:
Bad:
Funny: I'm laughing at you, not with you.
Creative: Did you come up with that yourself?
Informative: No shit sherlock.
Useful: I couldn't have survived without that quote of wisdom.
<3: You're so cute.
Optimistic: Good luck with that.
Winner: Hey boys, we got a real winner over here!

Good:
Like: If I agreed I would look like an asshole. (Use in response to things like GLWS)
Agree: I agree.

So if all else fails just don't use like and agree since at least then there is a system that is consistent even if it sucks.

How? The ratings system is utterly useless and it seems any suggestion that attempts to improve it even slightly is shot down. Just get rid of it if you guys are too lazy to fix it. Its broken, badly.

The only argument for keeping the current system is honestly people wanting to keep their meaningless rating points because they feel that they are worth something they just aren't. Any other argument suggests changes, but it seems pretty obvious any constructive change isn't going to happen and suggesting reasonable changes can lead to an even worse system as a reaction. Getting rid of ratings is the most logical course of action.

I still think it's better than having no rating system at all. Ratings just to show how you feel about a post.

There are too many problems. People saying ratings=rep, the ratings giving some sort of total in the first place, people thinking ratings entitle them to vouch copies, etc. . This is a business oriented site and has to maintain some level of professionalism to function correctly. I'm not saying everything has to be formal, but this is just the wrong environment to be rating people's posts as funny and telling people on a regular basis in a sarcastic manner that they are winners. Seven passive aggressive, troll ways to rate people is not healthy for the site. Its nothing more than a bullshit salad and I don't like salad. If you want to like or dislike a post you could always just reply to it. I guess this is where I disagree with you, no rating system would definitely be better than what is here now.

Rating are thought of as reputation because one means something and the other doesn't mean anything whatsoever. This really isn't the fault of the community. That would be like making a restaurant that sells beef patties and getting annoyed when people thought that the place was a hamburger joint. Rating and reputation are two terms that really are almost interchangeable anywhere else in the world but for some reason mean drastically different things on this one site. If someone has good ratings its logical to conclude their reputation is good or else they wouldn't have gotten the ratings. But nope, not here, here ratings are complete bullshit and fall out of the sky as insults.

Sorry, but none of this is the fault of having a stupid community which is really kind of the vibe I get from reading some of the comments. Of course new members think a fucking green plus bar prominently displayed under everyone's name named "ratings" has something to do with the user's reputation. Why else would it be there? This is entirely the fault of the system being shitty. Trying to blame it on the community for being slow in the head just isn't going to work in the long run because that's not the problem. Either actually make an attempt to fix it (it doesn't even have to be anything suggested here, just do something) or get rid of it.
