To add on what Forodin said, you also need some budget for advertisement. What A LOT of people do is put all their budget into making the server then forget they need money for advertisement. The main way to advertise servers as of today is YouTubers and the rates are between $10 - $20 for each 1k views, this isn't cheap at all and when talking about some good 10ks views it can climb to some good 100s or even 1000s of dollars. Just keep that in mind and you'll be safe

In addition to what the guys before me have stated you can't make a server with the sole intent of making money, but you need money to start a server. Also making a successful server requires Development, Advertisement, Management. If you're missing any of those you're server won't grow or be very successful.
what else do people make a server for nowadays?
I didn't mean to not be in it for money, but if you are more focused on making money than giving your players something to enjoy the server won't stay up.
Example:
If you open a server have bugs and keep the server up for a few weeks then close and then wait a few weeks and tell everyone all bugs are fixed a few weeks later and reopen. Do that multiple times your server will die and only people that will come back are those who already have money in the server and are in it for the huge f top you put on and only ever pay half since the short season.

Just from my experience alone from recently starting a server I already spent around three hundred just for pretty much the basic and advertisement isn't even added into I suggest looking for a dedicated server I use ovh but there's plenty out there. Compile a team to help you somebody with experience is much needed. An expect to spend hundreds on advertisement its a big investment but like what the other's say don't do it for the money do it because you have an idea of what a server should be like an no matter what don't give up mate have fun
I wish EULA kicked in so I can see all those scumbag servers shut down. That'd definitely show some true colors.

You didn't state that you were going to expand. You simply said:
But either way, it'll be hard to expand when starting from such a little amount of GB. Your server will get overloaded and it will create lag, and players wont come back.
Personally, I think the true key to success is uniqueness. There are soooo many kids that make their own servers each day, god forbid I would guess over 50 servers made by just 10 year olds each day, your server is going to be just like another faction server, its just like the rest of them. You need a big reason for people to come to your server over the other ones, and you can make your own game-modes, or you can change how the current game-modes are played, however if you just make another factions server. You may have a more difficult time succeeding.

I started my server with just 1GB on server.pro (which btw is a host I would not recommend because their price is outrageous. I ended up switching soon after) and it's been up since September and made hundreds of dollars in donations. So you're fine starting with 5GB.
I found that if someone joins when nobody is online, they'll just think it's an inactive server and leave. This makes it hard to get the first few players. DiscordSRV was a very helpful plugin because I had it set up so that whenever a new player joined my server, I would be @Mentioned on discord and then I could greet the player.
