I started my server with just 1GB on server.pro (which btw is a host I would not recommend because their price is outrageous. I ended up switching soon after) and it's been up since September and made hundreds of dollars in donations. So you're fine starting with 5GB.

I found that if someone joins when nobody is online, they'll just think it's an inactive server and leave. This makes it hard to get the first few players. DiscordSRV was a very helpful plugin because I had it set up so that whenever a new player joined my server, I would be @Mentioned on discord and then I could greet the player.

Good luck with your server!

Thank you! This has been the most useful so far!, thank you so much :)

You have to start somewhere :/
I understand you have to start somewhere, but if your starting with a low GB server because it is probably extremely cheap, your not going to get anywhere or grow because the server will be running terribly.

If you don't have a medium sized starting budget, you wont be successful. The truth hurts, and it's sad that it comes down to having a lot of money.

Yeah ok thats true. But I prefer to start with a smaller server so that if your server does not turn into something in the end, you haven't spent a lot of unnecessary money.

Most people have said that'll you'll have to instantly have/spend a lot of money. That isn't all true, you can easily start with a low budget, and work your way up. If you can develop your own server, great, that knocks out getting other developers. And though that may seem small, it's still a step to working your way up. A while ago I setup a server in 1 week, with 5GB of ram, and made $350 in 2 days.

You also have to grow a community, not as in advertising on other servers, but generally advertising. And sometimes, this doesn't require much money, well as a start. You have to use your money wisely, if you have a decent amount of money, (Lets say $100) Don't randomly spend it all on a few things/one things. Plan things out correctly, and see what needs to be changed, to be the most efficient. My latest server (Trestria) had a pretty well launch. And for advertisement, I only payed $10 to a 50K youtuber. That's it. There were around 30 people in the discord before, but that jumped up to around 70. And we were able to get 30 players on release (good for a small server), as well as $60 in the first 10 minutes.

I disagree. 5GB starting is totally fine, depending on the plugins he'll be running. People under-estimate low amounts of RAM these days - and as long as the plugins being used aren't full of bugs or memory leaks, then I don't think it'll be an issue.

Also - even if say 50 players join, 5GB of ram imo is enough to run a good stable server for that size playerbase.

Moving on from that topic, what I've found while working with servers is you really just need to go all in or just not do it. There's so many half-baked servers that have noticable drops in quality, and for players it's really hard to enjoy. Spend the same amount of time on every single thing you do for the server, so the quality is the same on every level (even if it's not ultra high quality).
Your first server isn't gonna blow up. It takes time and experience. Just work hard and you'll get there. :)

Not arguing anymore, you need a good budget to get a successful server. He said he wants tips to make a SUCCESSFUL SERVER, and all you two said is 5GB is enough for a SMALL server.

Focus on prepping the server so there isn't bugs on release before you advertise it. What I've done which has stung me later is thought "oh I'll set the release date 2 weeks away that'll give me enough time to test and finish the server" and those two weeks are the quickest two weeks of your life and 2 days before release you think "shit, I haven't done this haven't done that, but cant delay release because players will be mad". Get the server fully tested ect then announce a release date because a buggy server on release doesn't go down with players too well.

As for your server running 5GB ram, it's okay. Depending how many players join and what gamemode it will vary. My past servers have been factions with average 50-200 on release each release. This amount would need a dedicated server with a fast processor. A lot of people think ram is everything and yeah it's alright but if you have a shit processor on the hardware, the release especially for factions can be laggy which will cause players to leave.

Also depending on your gamemode if it's factions, heres a couple tips to get you set for a smooth release:
- Preload chunks (World Border, /wb fill) (Crucial)
- Get a trailer (You can get a 30s trailer for $15 or so) This will "announce" your server's release
- Build up the discord to the server (This is your playerbase, make sure it's active and popular before you announce the release of your server)
- Advertising (Personally I've never paid for youtube advertisement before and my previous servers have done okay, however the more advertisement you do, the better it is.)

These are just my opinions, take them as you will. Hope this helped even a little.

Thank you! Could you message me on discord? i would like to talk to you about starting up etc. Thanks :) Uzinkly#5479

I made a server with 50 bucks and it got over 100 players on release, dont go 'if you dont have a medium sized stating budget you wont be succesful'. Cause you weren't succesful on it,doesnt mean that Uzinkly will be. Its about connections, the community, how you spread the word. Doesnt always take money. Oh and yeah that server had 8gb also and it ran perfectly fine.
You obviously didn't read the thread. He said he needed advice to run a SUCCESSFUL SERVER, I'm giving him MY OPINION as ADVICE.
Not arguing anymore, I simply replied to the thread with what the starter asked for.
