Hello,
I am interested in the cost of setting up a server host. This isn't involving a datacenter etc, what I mean is how much would it be to purchase a few dedicated servers from a service provider such as OVH or LSN, buy the multicraft, whmcs, web design etc.

But on a budget, so when i say web design I don't mean all these things that involve jquery that cost hundreds and have all little popup colourful boxes etc, just something that seems legit that doesn't cost the bank.
If you could let me know what the variable/fixed costs are (estimated) so I can work out the amount of servers sold to break even.
Thanks :)

$200, that would pay for everything, and a good 128GB dedi. Multicraft, you will need a dynamic and that could be maybe $20 for now. WHMCS, and hiring someome to make it look good, and not just the default, wont be cheap. Adding domain costs and everything else. Would come to around that.

You will also need a SSL certificate, since you will be dealing with important infomation. Like someones address etc.

Just to add to that, if your website hosting provider/your dedi can use a free ssl called Let's Encrypt, which can take quite a bit of money off your list.

Thats true, i think cloudflare do free ones too, that could be an option if the host doesnt provide one.

So do you mean its $200 for a 128gb dedi server or $200 for everything ?

I know that web design will probably be the biggest cost so I wasn't sure.

If you're looking for a cheap server, I would think about getting one of these. They have a bit less than 128gb of ram but can run off SSDs and it has a faster CPU than most of OVH's dedicated servers. But, if I were you, for starting a hosting company, I would save a bit more money to get a server with an i7 6700k or i7 4790k because generally servers will need to complete processes faster since Minecraft Servers run using 1 core (by default).

thats some good info there, unlike ** cough cough ** jubble who runs on a system but overloads it and overuses it with rams that suddenly stopped my server. :p

But considering most of the minecraft servers ordered are going to be on the cheapest plan (512mb ram), then if i had a 128gb server and about 60% of the servers were 512mb ram ones then thats over 128 servers sharing the same cpu already which would overload

Therefore, if your getting a dedi, be smart, host 512MB servers, but set them to expire maybe in like.. 12 hours (example) and start off with steady 1GB - 8GB servers. Slowly gradually increasing the price by a dollar or two.[DOUBLEPOST=1467202991][/DOUBLEPOST]

im doubt 60 people are going to be on ur website at once asking for 512MB servers that will completely fuck up ur system.

Its not the amount of servers. 512MB servers, have very few plugins / none. They are mainly just used as a bungeecord, which use next to nothing.

I wouldn't recommend hosting that many servers on any CPU. But if you're going for a hosting solution that will be cheap (possibly sacrificing performance), I would go for an OVH server with many cores. However, if you want to spend more time on setup and don't mind spending extra time on maintenance, it may be a good idea to get a bunch of VPSs that have lower specs (2-4 cores & 8-16gb ram) and distribute the servers across them.

If you are going to start a hosting company you have to be 100% sure you know what you are doing. Seting up a website, and installing multicraft, is nothing. When you have a hosting comapny you are responsible for peoples data, and if you dont make sure its secure, and data does get stolen. Then you can find yourself in legal trouble with the DPA. Main reason i wont start one, all i need to do, is miss one thing, and my system could get hacked.

I agree completely, hosting is nothing to be taken lightly and Minecraft servers tend to be quite the target for script kiddies who try to 'hack' using things like SQL injection which, on an insecure site, could release all of your client's info.

I find it funny you want to setup a server host, but don't know how to.

I think his post is asking how much it would cost, not how to do it?
