Greetings McMarket,

So like the title says should I start a website host. It would be cheap and even include free plans. I am curious as if I should start one though. I could use CPanel or create my own custom panel.

It may even expand to Mc Hosting once my custom panel "PaperPanel" is completed. It won't be based from any other panel but entirely my own.

High performance, consistent uptime and fast support. Minecraft hosting that just works.

Very saturated market I would suggest not.

cPanel for web hosting ptero for game hosting

If I did start a minecraft host I would not use ptero. I am actually developing my own game panel which is not based/forked from any other. I guess I would use a modified ptero while I developed my own. Thanks for the information though.

If I did should I use CPanel or my own panel I can develop?
If you’re capable of making a good panel, then go for it. You’d be able to offer more competitive pricing, as you’re not paying out for cpanel licences, and you have the advantages of being able to develop new features, that other hosts don’t provide. What other’s have said is true, the web hosting, and the hosting market in general is quite saturated, so standing out is important. Your own panel with your own features is a good way to do just that.

I was thinking of using a resller(with cpanel). I may just use a dedicated server so I am able to develop my own panel. I do see your point and if I did develop a host I would surely want to stand out. I will offer the user multiple choices, they can select between CPanel or my own.

There’s many companies that allow you to do that, some companies allow Plex as well as cPanel.

Many of them use the most used panel "cPanel". I was thinking of creating my own panel and standing out.

What I meant by it is like cPanel, pleak for example. Best of luck though!

I do see where you are coming from. Some hosting industries allow selection of panels. I was thinking of creating an entire new one developed by me. Thanks for the suggestion though. I am still debating as to if I should open one.

In my honest opinion and with my knowledge and experience of running/working with multiple hosting businesses myself: No.

Here's why:
  1. The market is extremely saturated, even if you could develop a custom panel with features that wow customers, I still wouldn't do it. It would be a waste of money.
  2. Custom Panels sometimes deter customers. People like what they know works. Unfamiliar things can scare people off, easily. Especially things that could be vulnerable to exploits, which brings me on to my next point:
  3. Exploit vulnerability. If you don't properly spend the time rigorously testing your panel, then it's more likely to have major exploits.
  4. Cost. Depending on what hardware/software you would want to invest in, the cost can rise pretty fast. Take a good dedicated server and slap cPanel on it and you're talking relatively expensive already.
However there are some good things to making a custom panel with a web hosting company:
If you were able to do this, and the panel was good, you could make a large sum of money.
If not, and you fail: money down the drain.

Monthly Cost breakdown of a "Good" Starter cPanel host:
LiteSpeed Web Server: $25/mo
cPanel + WHM Dedicated License: $45/mo
CloudLinux OS: $16/mo
WHMCS Starter: $15.95/mo
cPanel Backup Solution: $10/mo
1x Dedicated Server: $70/mo+

Total: $180/mo (minimum)
For a custom panel, it could be so much more.

TLDR: Don't do it.

I would offer a choice between cpanel and a panel but nice argument. Should I start any sort of host or stick to developing? Thanks for the feedback though.

Mate, I am telling you, you will not be able to provide anything any cheaper than other hosts and still make profit. You MIGHT be able to get away with breaking even if your only goal is to provide cheap hosting, but you will be spending a lot of time setting it up as well as helping customers.
