Hey,

Earlier today I was wondering how long it was since my last advertisement because I had no clue and the chat logs only went back a couple of minutes, so I asked a Chat Mod if they could check (since I do not have ultimate I have restricted access to chat logs).

Here is how that conversation went:

I then asked them to double-check, they said they would, they then responded with:

I understand why this is a "policy" but it should be more of a suggestion than a rule. If they can check the last advert time is more than 20 minutes, then they can say to do it.

It should be changed and staff should reserve the right to just reply with "no" or "no, i'm busy" or any other reason.

Why can't users just set a timer though to keep track of their ads? When in doubt, just wait another 20 minutes. Some users even copy and paste their ads and put the minutes in a brackets at the end so you know when it was as long as you can paste again. I honestly don't see a reason for this change.

That if staff can assist in avoiding the members breaking site rules, they should be allowed to do so.

Just find it funny that staff have enough time to look through to see if its off the 20 minutes, but not enough to prevent people from breaking the rules. Sounds like a speed trap to me.

Solution: buy ultimate and read the logs yourself ;)

2. Why is there not just a /advert (message) type thing in chat that has a 20m timer before you can use it again making this the only way people can advertise threads? Instantly fixes the problem.

Simply purchasing Ultimate is this solution though as not every ad is the same? Furthermore, not every ad is "buying/selling". I feel I can say, without too much backlash, that most users who are at least supreme either have made, or are currently making, at least $5 a month which would pay for the Ultimate.

Honestly the majority of the 3.4 violations don't come from us looking back in logs, it comes from you, the users. You guys report each other which we then check the report and deal with. We don't go out looking for violations of the rules, but some of you guys are ruthless with your reporting and strictness in the rules and your reports.

The site rules should not require a donation rank to abide by.

Ultimate simply acts as a ease of access to see past messages from you and other users. No where are you required to purchase Ultimate to follow the rules. If you would not like to purchase an upgrade I recommend either setting a timer in a separate tab via Google "Set a Timer for 20 minutes", appending the minutes to your advertisement "Ad Here [14]" so you know the next time you can advertise is xx:34.

I see this as a means to put responsibility for following our rules onto the staff team rather than oneself. Why keep track of how long it was since your last ad, if you can just tag the active staff member three times within 20 minutes asking if it’s time yet?

Prior to it not being policy to decline these requests, users would do exactly that. It would interfere with ongoing conversation the staff member is trying to have with other members in chatbox, accrue a lot of wasted staff time, support the idea that chat was for ads more than it was talking, and most importantly, put the responsibility for calculating the advertisement time onto the staff member rather than the user in question. What if the staff member made a mistake and gave the wrong answer? Who’s responsibility would it then be if the user violated the 20 minute rule? The staff member that gave the incorrect answer or the user? That’s what I mean by offloading responsibility.

It is not the staff member who is deciding to advertise at the tail and head of every twenty minutes, and it is not their responsibility to keep track of each and every user’s advertisement time. Their responsibility is to chat with everyone, handle reports made and any violations that they directly witness. If a user would like to advertise at the soonest available second, they should take on the responsibility themselves by setting a timer, or making a note of the time that they advertised so that they can compare it to the current time whenever they’re thinking about advertising again.

The reason we don’t have a timer built in is because we want chat to remain primarily a chat. We don’t want to encourage that users advertise their thread at the soonest available second. The best solution would be if everyone waited long enough to where it was obviously longer than 20 minutes before posting their advertisement again. Forget to check the time of your last ad? Wait another 20 minutes and violating the rule will be impossible.

Wait, we need a rank in order to set a timer? We need a rank in order to wait 20 minutes?
No, you're just taking my words out of context and then mocking the result.
The suggestion can be to just display 25 minutes in chatbox instead of X amount of messages, so people can just check if they are following the rules, instead of having to wait 40 minutes because they forgot to restart their timer.

Your suggestion wasn't this at all though, it was for staff to tell you when your last ad was. But that might be a better solution to people being warned for 3.4 if the administration team wanted to give in to it.
In all honesty, I made this thread after asking a staff member and rather than them saying they were busy, they replied they weren't allowed, it would have taken ~5 seconds and chatbox was dead, I believe common sense > a vague policy that doesn't really assist users in any way.

If staff could be better spent doing other things it doesn't seem like they are when there are a ton of Scam Reports left without answers for weeks at a time.

+1 to fixing this

this is dumb. you should just keep track of the timing yourself, do you actually expect them to sit in shout box with fifty different stopwatches timing each person who puts an advertisement in the shoutbox? no. the reason it is a rule is to stop shoutbox from being spammed with advertisements. if you feel like it has been twenty minutes, then it is probably long enough.
