I want to start this thread off by saying somebody was scammed $350 in my name because they left their skype in their bio. It sucks, and I want MCM to make a pinned thread or something urging users to never deal over Skype.

A pinned thread saying don't deal over skype would stop (the majority of) these impersonation scams. And I know some of you are probably saying "oh well it's their fault for falling for it" doesn't change the fact it'll stop people from being scammed, hell if it stops even ONE person from being scammed I see it worthwhile. I've attached two images, showing the scammer, and the paid money.

I don't think it would hurt taking one more measure to prevent people from being scammed.

Also if you disagree please don't just leave a rating, tell me how this idea can be improved or changed. Thanks.

It is not possible for MCM to control this activity, however discouraging it is something they can do and I support.
Generally speaking, all transactions are handled here on MCM from my part. I refuse to do any deals elsewhere, unless they are not MCM related.

To new users they aren't aware of this, and it leads to them getting scammed.

Although this is true, Skype is the most common way of contacting people for business. Someone who is smart would contact the person directly through the forums to get their official Skype. Unless you're a careless person, avoid being scammed is easy.

In a perfect world everyone knows this, however those who are new to the market in general won't be aware of these types of things, all deals should be done over the site either way, not only do you know you're talking to the right person, if they scam you you'll be able to prove it all easily. Just because they aren't that smart doesn't mean mcm should let them get scammed.
I suggest using MCM Conversations or Discord, Instead of Skype.

I suggested the following to Mick in a chat whisper.

Discourage the usage of outside chat platforms such as Skype, Discord, TeamSpeak, etc. To do this, simply state that on the day of implementation, any deal done off-site is not acceptable. Force users to use the PM system, and make live updates a feature for all users to make it more worth using for non-ranked people. If users are scammed off-site, they can still report it and get the scammer banned, but the victim receives warning points to discourage them from future use of that. Also make it where you can't give reputation without clear proof of a deal being done on site, so users aren't just repping each other saying "vouch dealt with him" when they may not have or did it off-site.

I don't know if it will ever be implemented, but it was the basic idea I had.
I completely agree, but the reputation thing most likely won't happen, I quote this from Justis

"If someone has a negative opinion of you, and you wish to improve your reputation, it is your responsibility to improve their opinion of you and therefore your reputation via communication with the reputation author"

Check my negative rep, he backed out of a deal he made and wasted my time so I negative repped him for such and the sole reason he negative repped me was because of that.

MCM is not a stable platform with it's numerous downtimes. I would happily open a scam report and take the warning points instead of being tied to this site for discussing deals that I cannot risk to be cut-off from the buyer/seller due to a downtime.

I don't mind if MCM put up warnings here and there to discourage use of skype/discord/whatever, but making a rule against it would be too silly and a change people would find more annoying the useful.

There is absolutely no problem with dealing over skype. 90% of my commissions are over skype. However, if you're an idiot about it, and/or do not confirm who you're dealing with, you're gonna get scammed eventually.
And it would definitely hurt, since it would mean EVERYTHING would have to take place on MCM, which MCM is not really geared up on. If I want to discuss something in greater detail, I couldn't get a voice call etc.[DOUBLEPOST=1502566835][/DOUBLEPOST]There's a guide in the wiki about how to reduce chances of being scammed. Readthat, if you're in those fields and follow those rules it will drastically reduce your chances of being scammed.
The only times I have been scammed since the first time it happened to me on MCM was when I broke the rules I first set up for myself, and later wrote down in the post that became the basis for that wiki post.

There isn't that much downtime honestly. There's the occasional DDoS attacks which last 5-10 minutes, but that's it. I do all business here and the downtime has never had an effect on me or my business dealings.

Honestly, I see your point.
However,?
  1. Skype deals are easy
  2. You can ScreenShare on there
  3. Faster replies
All we have to do is make sure users PM people confirming skype before dealing.

Let's put it like this, the only difference between getting scammed on skype and getting scammed on MCM, IF you did all the verification etc properly, is that the person may be able to claim it wasn't him if he was new enough to not have an established skype name yet.

I mean you cant have a rule or urge people not to do deals on skype is not allowed, its the buyers fault if he really cares about his money he would double check with the user on MCM. Everyone on mcm (most people) state that they have impersonators on skype so don't deal with them and PM them before dealing which should be enough to keep the buyer safe.

I recommend using discord over skype, for the simple fact that discord is more secure than skype. Discord will protect you and your IP. Maybe mcm could just have a notice recommending to use discord but not forcing it and if you get scammed on there it is your own fault.

Interesting, I heardDiscord also sells data, because of the loops in their TOS. I have not verified though, so its just a conspiracy theory for now.
Anyway, A notice to recommend using discord wouldn't be a bad idea, as well as a notice to check if someone on skype/discord is the legit user.

I'd say people should start putting it in their threads when selling something. Also, I can 100% agree that MCM should make a pinned comment about the topic, as I've been scammed when I was new.
