I'm personally a huge fan of 1.8.9, however, most of Minecraft play on either 1.12 or 1.15. 1.12 is still popular because it was the last update before they did the big server breaking 1.13 and 1.14 updates and 1.8.9 is popular because it was the last update that Mojang did before the introduction of the updated combat mechanics.

And of course, the latest version will always carry the bulk of the players.

1.8 - 1.8.8 is just the most popular version that there is. Reason? Probably legit just the combat even tho you can disable it server side people just prefer 1.8
