I'm interested to know what's the most people pay to host their Minecraft server. It's a known fact this industry has went lower and lower in price over the years to $3/GB and below being the requested cost a lot of the time.

Honestly speaking, what's the most you pay for your Minecraft server? If you use a dedicated server, just calculate a rough price if you used shared hosting.

Helps us out a bunch to provide the best service we can!

Thanks.

Honestly everyone these days are trying to have the best prices but when they should really be focusing on the quality, and benefits of going with your host.

Let's say we have a $3/GB host and a $9/GB host, the $3/GB has terrible support and little to no benefits, the $8/GB comes with a free mysql database, 24/h support, and good hosting locations.

It's not always like that. A lot of people, especially on this forum, resell OVH/SYS, so the quality is very similar. It's up to the person running the business to get it right.

Most likely, but the problem is that the market is pretty 'young' in terms of age. People don't like to spend any amount of money. Shared hosting has a pretty bad reputation because the larger, better hosts (CubedHost, is one I can name that is truly offering a premium service) who offer a premium service, network, support, and all that stuff run at a higher price. They target a completely different customer base which is, unfortunately, seeming to die. Since people tend to use cheaper hosts, it gives shared hosting a bad reputation, people jump to dedicated hosting which is also of a poorer quality.

It's a hard market to work with for quite a lot of reasons, two I mentioned above. We run at prices of $7.99/GB. When we changed how we operated over a year ago, we were advertising here with unsatisfactory results. We've changed the client base we target and found more success there. We are planning to up our prices to $10/GB, however, with the introduction of a new premium panel and moving to premium InterNAP locations for our services, with optimised servers, we obviously need to up our prices here. We've always focused on offering the absolute best service we can and I think with our upcoming upgrades you'll see in 1-2 months time, we should exceed anything at around the same price range, but the sustainability of the market is a concern.

This poll should hopefully indicate to us, to some extent, what kind of results we can expect within Minecraft. Our new panel and server setup allows us to expand to other games quickly, and that's probably what we'll begin to do with a rebranding stage.

Yes and no, price can generally be an indicator of quality. Unfortunately in this industry, anything below and including $5.50/GB tends to be around the same quality, so it's harder to compare them just using price.

True, but it's also hard to find the truth. With most hosts saying "We have the best support. We have the best quality. We have the fastest servers." It's hard to know what's true and what's not without dropping hundreds trying out every host that exists.

A lot of them hosts won't laster than the summer period. But yeah, it is hard to find the best out of them all. Unfortunately, marketing does that. When I personally am buying, I tend to look at reviews but the reviews around here wouldn't personally be able to influence my decision properly if I was on the hunt for a host. Problem is, a lot of people jump onto an OVH dedicated server quickly rather than a better tier server host, which imo can run you much better for quality and performance. The servers by a quality host are better optimised, and obviously you get real Minecraft support from the host. A willingness to go for good hosts would definitely be a market changer.[DOUBLEPOST=1470414466][/DOUBLEPOST]
I would say the most anyone should pay is about $3/GB, I personally like hosts that do $2.50/GB..
Why not more? Who is 'anyone'?

I agree with that. I personally rent a dedicated box from SYS, however I understand that's not for everyone. I use it for more than minecraft servers however, so I get plenty of use out of it. On top of that, I know exactly how to troubleshoot a server and fix my issues, so I don't need to rely on hosts to do it for me

There are certainly times I'd use SYS personally, it's priced fairly well, it offers fair performance for the price, and I'd definitely go to SYS if I was needing a server for my personal projects. But when you offer services where you receive money (Minecraft servers) you really need to offer the best performance for your players. Minecraft is a live multiplayer platform that is quite dynamic, it needs the resources.

I dont think the prices for hosting will ever be able to go far up, tbh. You simply can't make enough money to afford it anymore.

I mainly look in the $4-$6/gb area (including Dedicated IP) as hosting is getting cheaper due to higher competition I believe these price ranges are the best for server performance (shared) and support performance :D

The most expensive I've seen is mcprohosting, $10/GB
$10/GB is a pretty standard price, to be honest, for performance providers. Some exceed that price. I personally would see no reason to exceed $10/GB, but some smaller hosts intending to provide or exceed the service that much larger hosts do may have to charge more.

The benefit of a small host that is owned by someone 18+, registered and a legitimate company is that they will care a lot more about keeping your customs. You should get much better service and support, because they need you. It may take longer, but they should do every reasonable attempt to keep your business.[DOUBLEPOST=1470418024][/DOUBLEPOST]

They are, even real world hosting prices are decreasing, but average wages are increasing and effort is also increasing due to competition, less money for the host to sustain themselves.

Thing is, once you start paying $10/GB, you're doing it wrong. Most people can't live off of 1 GB, meaning they increase. Let's say the average person gets 3GB, which isn't much, that's $30/Month. You can get a dedicated server with 16GB for less, or a 32gb for just a little more. It's the better option in the long run

You can, yeah. Obviously the host is (most likely, in this example take a performance host) going to have better performance per GB (if you want to measure it that way). The dedicated server allows for more servers, but the host probably still has better raw and relative performance, obviously its own dedicated support team for the game that a dedicated server host won't give, rids you of a lot of configuration you'd normally have to do, manages and optimises server backends (a lot of people aren't really qualified to have a secure server set up, this server is going to be secure and you don't have to worry about your data), has high reliability and backups and you know you can count on someone if something goes wrong - you aren't just left in the dark. Doing everything a host does is going to be more expensive overall and being able to have that sense of security, something to rely on. For me, that's pretty good.

I am a qualified sysadmin, so if I was making my own server I would probably go get a dedicated server, but if I wanted something just for me and my friends I'd probably go with a performance host and just get a small-ish server. $10-20 a month isn't much to me for allowing me to play a game peacefully without any worries or anything with my friends. If I wanted to start a larger server assuming I had no qualifications, I'd probably rather just go with a decent host and think of a business strategy to stay in a profit and get my money back (and for most Minecraft servers, this is no problem).

You pay for what you get. If you buy 1 dollar a gb expect horrible support and lag. I rather pay the normal amount I do right now (5.99 a gb) but I get great support it runs off good servers and if I need anything I get a ticket response within a hour. I have used servers that are $3 a gb and those are fine and if your on a budget go with those.
