Hey,
I own a service team (Ocean Services), and was wondering why so many people are against them? I see why freelancers may be, especially for teams that don’t get many clients, but I was wondering why they’re disliked beyond that.

It's because they go around spamming their stupid copy and paste advertisements on every single threads with the same generic and annoying message, 'our freelancers can do this HQ and cheap for you,' and the owners of the team are some idiots who hire a bunch of people to do their usual freelancing jobs and then take a cut of their earnings.

I would say the main reason people are against service teams is because there are a lot which have left a bad taste in people's mouths which have just spam advertised and given low quality work and until the quality goes up and the spam goes down then it's hard for us to change our minds on such things.
While that’s true, I’m sure that many people have also had a good experience with service teams. (me for example - if I’m looking for something I rarely go to individual freelancers). As to the spamming, I think you mean the copy pasting? If so, similar to the last point there are many service teams who don’t copy paste, but suffer from the reputation that other teams have generated for teams.

It's mainly the way the sales reps copy and paste their generic messages everywhere, changing out a few words such as the persons name, and what service the person requires.

It gets old real quick, it'd be fine if they wrote a proper message each time instead of using an annoying template.

I rarely go to individual freelancers
This is where individual freelancers lose out, too. Because many people would think along those same lines, a lot of potential customers that individual freelancers could have had are now gone.

This could force freelancers to join a service team, which is, in the grand scheme of themes, a liability for the freelancer themselves. This could include payment issues, reliability issues, etc. And most service teams take a percentage of each commission, which, believe me, is incredibly annoying.

If I'm going to do a job, for example, I'll charge what I expect the price to be and would want nothing less/more for what the request is.

I see that a lot, and that’s a good point - I try to avoid sending people similar messages, but a lot of the time the first person to the thread gets the commission. So while I don’t copy paste, many of the messages I send will be similar. Also, many freelancers put less effort in than service teams, sometimes just commenting their discord or saying “I can do this” without a way to contact them.

Typing a single sentence requires more effort than copying and pasting

I understand what you say about taking a percentage, but a lot of the time we mainly take a portion of it to pay freelancers and keep the team running. Management usually takes comparatively little.

Also, for me, the reason I go to service teams is because they have more people to complete the commission in case something goes wrong.

Furthermore, you could encounter payment issues dealing with the client one-on-one, and I wouldn’t recommend joining a service team without making sure that they will pay you after commissions.

Finally, I guess the way I justify taking a cut is because service teams can get you more clients simply because we have more people online at one time trying to find freelancers commissions.

Here's a couple of my personal reasons:
  1. Low quality copy-pasted response to request posts.
  2. Invites to their service team Discord which leads to an automated ticket system a client has to fill out (despite already describing what they want in their post.)
  3. They insist on you stating your budget which sucks because it opens a window of opportunity for them to overcharge you.

You can't really see the portofolio of a service team - even if they provide it, it's hard to acknowledge what freelancer did what, meaning that you may be assigned someone that didn't do that amazing work you saw on their portofolio.

If you're just requesting a simple task like a configuration then service teams are fine. But otherwise the generic way service teams operate are sometimes distasteful.

I agree with your first point, but that doesn’t apply for all service teams.

This doesn’t apply for most service teams. And for ones that do they usually have an option to just talk to a sales rep instead.

Teams shouldn’t demand for your budget, what I do is just get a quote if the client doesn’t have a budget.

It was based on my experience of dealing with multiple service teams, of course not all is the same but I'm confident in saying a good portion of service teams do those things.

I guess what I’m trying to say is that all service teams are suffering from the reputation that some teams have set. For example almost all of my custom messages I write for people are instantly funnied because people assume they’re copy pasted.

Was just about to screenshot his posts and do this myself, nice work[DOUBLEPOST=1537960905][/DOUBLEPOST]

But the thing is, 50% of your post is copy pasted, so its not custom, and they're not wrong for assuming it's copy pasted

I’m not saying that they’re not similar, but they're not the same. It’s not to the extent of some teams that literally copy paste for every message. I at least read the thread and get a quote and timeframe if possible.[DOUBLEPOST=1537964255][/DOUBLEPOST]

That’s true, but I don’t understand why people who don’t put any effort into their messages should have the right to criticise people that do. On the whole, individual freelancers just put “I can do this, discord#0000 is my discord” Side note: This isn’t aimed at you, it’s a general statement.

Penzzly LLC
https://www.mc-market.org/threads/157274/ Also previously known as Minecript, managed seperately from the first.

There are also lots of shitty teams that pop up and disappear on 2 month cycles, popping up then going inactive and disappearing. Not to mention the onslaught of low rep members looking at teams like my own and trying to copy paste the same thing without any backing or infrastructure to properly fund and manage getting it off the ground. That's why there are only 2 or 3 in total that have properly succeeded.

As others have stated, it's general low quality when it comes to it.
Spamming messages around threads shows a lack of "effort" I guess is the right word?

That's why my team has a specific rule of "no messaging on threads" so we don't gather that reputation of being low quality shit posters.
