    maybe those, i actually stated with ubuntu server, but it's pretty similar to debian when i switched over.

    in that case, before you get a vps, get a vm on virtualbox with debian and play around with it. do some googling, also, if you ever need help with something, there are tons of people here willing to help you.

    colo is where you rock up with your own hardware to a datacenter, but they provide cooling and internet and stuff. (to my understanding)
