Allow basic insults

Shouldn’t be getting warning points for calling someone a retard or a dumbass, this only started being enforced as of recently.

I have 1 question, why?
What good ever comes out of insulting people. When someone insults someone in the chat, for example, it just becomes people throwing insults at each other. When we think of warning points, severity and also past verbal warnings come into play. Most of the time, if it is a fairly common/basic insult you may just get a verbal warning because it is not bad enough to give 5 warning points for but it is a behavior that should be discouraged. If the person who is insulting others has done this multiple times before and has been verbally warned, then I feel like they should get warning points because it is clear it is a behavior that they won't stop.
Insults, in general, encourage toxicity so there is no reason why we should allow them at all. The punishment is always based on the severity.
If you feel that the punishment you got for your "basic insult" was too harsh you can always appeal it.

I can agree with most of what you’ve said here as most definitely I’ve seen insults being thrown around, and toxicity stemming from insults, but that does not mean we have to outright get rid of them. I think it depends on context. Let me provide an example: If I were to be given warning points for saying a simple phrase to someone like “Are you a dumbass” or something like that in response to someone, I don’t think that would necessarily be something warning points should be handed out for.

Hurling insults around at people doesn’t do anything besides starting conflict. While I agree it’s ridiculous that users are using the reputation system as a means of getting payback on someone who has insulted them, it doesn’t justify allowing toxic behavior on the site.

I think a lot of parents had a rule that should always stick. If you're going to say something, make sure it's nice or don't say it at all.

If you don't like the fact you people can't hurl words at other people, then maybe you should go to a website which allows it. This place is a market and not a place to be belittling other people for the actions they perform. I believe punishments are executed by say, reports and moderators?

Also, if any of you have an issue with free speech then well... that's a you problem.

Also to those singling people out and/or calling people offensive slurs.. get your priorities straight.

I don't really think insulting someone really amplifies your point. I've seen instances where profanity can amplify a point since it adds a level of seriousness and emotion to it. Using insults on the other hand, makes people, at least in my eyes, look immature and to some degree toxic. Reps given due to insults I feel like are completely fine because it shows the type of person you are, I would personally not work with someone that insults others. In the situation you said, if you had a history of insulting people and have been verbally warned for it, there is a good chance you will get warned for that or warned for what normally comes after the initial insult, more insults.

A lot of the time, if we aren't in chat, these messages are reported by others. That shows that not only does the staff care, other members care as well. I don't think some of you understand that not everyone wants to see insults being thrown at each other, the person that was insulted doesn't necessarily need to be insulted for it to be wrong. There's a bunch of other people that would prefer if it wasn't there and for good reason. I don't see why we should allow this type of behavior and why it shouldn't be discouraged.

It wasn't just a simple insult, it was clearly disrespectful and not needed whatsoever. The minute we say yes, you can insult people in a basic way without punishment, we will get more and more of that behavior demonstrated in the screenshot.
