Today I came across a thread in which a new member was requesting a web designer in Spanish. However, he provided an English translation as well. A chat moderator replied to the thread telling him that he was breaking a rule for putting Spanish in the thread.

I went back into the rules and checked the specific wording and he is in fact right, but in all honestly, it is a dumb rule.

Code:
1.9 Do not post content in a language other than English, unless such content is in a private message with another member that has agreed to receive your message containing the content.

The fact that the individual posted an English translation should be an exception and the user should not be punished.

I would go on to argue how allowing alternate languages in threads/posts would greatly benefit MC-Market as a whole. It would create a more ethnically diverse community and bring the world closer together.

As always, I'm here to stick up for the little guys who have no voice.

no thanks. we all know it is so moderators dont need to know 20 languages to moderate this forum. If you wanna speak spanish or whatever, use PM.

Also, I dont want to have to google translate entire threads to be able to understand the basics. You can learn 1 language additional (english), but you can hardly learn 20.
I mastered english from 0 to near-fluent in 3 years. that means most people can deal with it in a slightly longer time

Read the WHOLE suggestion. I am asking for the rule to be slightly modified to allow other languages ONLY if an English translation is provided.

I think the reason that's not allowed is because there is no sure way to tell that whats stated there is the same as the translation.

That's a fair point.
I'm willing to bet there is an automatic translation add-on for Xenforo.
that would be pretty great. as well as pretty hillarious, if it's anything like skype translate.
Best situation would be a translation tool you can turn on in settings to auto-translate things[DOUBLEPOST=1463948116][/DOUBLEPOST]
Why would someone secretly put in spanish "I'm gonna kill all your familys build the wall hehehehehe" then put a English translation of "Looking to buy a plugin!"
maybe to put something up for sale that's against the rules?
or it could say to PM them for a link to leaked things.
Of course, chances of that are low, but that's what I think would be the reasoning behind that.

If he posted an english translation, he shouldn't of been punished.

But who here speaks spanish? I am sure a few people do, but most of us do not.

It seems unnecessary to allow people to write in another language if you're forcing them to translate. Why even bother writing the spanish if you could just write the English? I agree, we should promote cultural diversity, but I'm not sure if this is a productive way to reach that goal.

That's a good point, but what about attracting non-English speakers to the forum? They will need the foreign language translation.

As much as I would like to promote ethnic and cultural diversity, if someone doesn't speak English, they won't really fit in well. Even if everyone who was bi-lingual posted in both languages, the majority of content here will still be only English.

Also Non-English speakers won't be allowed to respond unless they translate with Google Translate or something similar which has the potential to screw up translations and cause unnecessary issues. So a non-English speaker will be unable to read the majority of content here regardless, and won't be able to respond to any posts. I just think that non-English speakers should look for other forums in their native tongue, rather than us causing everyone difficulty to allow a few more people to join.

Fair enough. I respect your opinion.

I've always felt this rule was off and a bit discriminating. There are so many users on the Internet who don't speak English and would probably love to come sell stuff on here and be apart of our community. This rule pushes them out and may even seem racist to some. As far as the argument goes for the staff not being able to understand other languages:
Translate what they say or promote a user who can speak their language to chat mod or mod. That's how a lot of forums handle that.
