Today I came across a thread in which a new member was requesting a web designer in Spanish. However, he provided an English translation as well. A chat moderator replied to the thread telling him that he was breaking a rule for putting Spanish in the thread.

I went back into the rules and checked the specific wording and he is in fact right, but in all honestly, it is a dumb rule.

Code:
1.9 Do not post content in a language other than English, unless such content is in a private message with another member that has agreed to receive your message containing the content.

The fact that the individual posted an English translation should be an exception and the user should not be punished.

I would go on to argue how allowing alternate languages in threads/posts would greatly benefit MC-Market as a whole. It would create a more ethnically diverse community and bring the world closer together.

As always, I'm here to stick up for the little guys who have no voice.

I've always felt this rule was off and a bit discriminating. There are so many users on the Internet who don't speak English and would probably love to come sell stuff on here and be apart of our community. This rule pushes them out and may even seem racist to some. As far as the argument goes for the staff not being able to understand other languages:
Translate what they say or promote a user who can speak their language to chat mod or mod. That's how a lot of forums handle that.
agreed, if this suggestion gets accepted, then there should be a "Translator Rank".
For example an Spanish Translator, Italian Translator, German Translator etc.

hm, that's definitely an interesting concept. thing is, there's a point that still stands.

If there are people that translate the post, why even bother posting the non-english text still?

Just put it into perspective. If McM was a Spanish site and us English speakers weren't allowed to speak English how would you feel? We wouldn't be able to sell anything or be apart of the community. I'd feel a little bad.

Why? Nobody really cares about your ethnicity on here, we're all behind our monitors. What matters on here is how reliable and trustworthy you are and how you present yourself. It is a marketplace forum on the internet after all.

Instead of wanting others to change to meet my desires, I would adapt and either use a translator, learn Spanish or find one of the many English forums out there.

If you must, use a translator, learn English or find a different forum, but we're not changing our rules just to accommodate a few people who don't read and follow them.

Well that last statement is a bit racist. They can't speak English because they maybe don't live in an English speaking country? And a few? You do realize the amount of users on the Internet who don't speak English right? We all don't live in the United States or Britain unfortunately. Nobody is also going to learn English just to join the site. I doubt anyone on here would do that for any language. If we just throw this suggestion away because the staff are too lazy to allow diversity in the community then it just proves suggestions shouldn't even exist.[DOUBLEPOST=1464017774][/DOUBLEPOST]Also, speaking Spanish or Arabic doesn't make you less trustworthy than anyone else. I guess because I speak English I'm superior to everyone else right?[DOUBLEPOST=1464017993][/DOUBLEPOST]One more thing, we don't care about ethnicity yet we restrict other languages which could ultimately lead to restricting certain cultures. It seems like we honestly do to an extant care.

I think it is necessary to speak English in this forum, I am not agree of global ideology that English is the common speech of this planet, but this forum is English so everyone should respect that here should be able to speak English , like if someone goes to another spanish forum it is necessary to speak Spanish. I am Spanish, and I think that if people speak each in his language this would be wild, I also believe that we can understand English better.

Racist? I don't get why people spit out that term so loosely nowadays. Forcing certain groups to use different water fountains or go to lower quality schools etc is racist. But this? Come on, it's an internet forum based in English. If speaking English is a rule, then speak English or use a different forum. Don't expect others to change to suit your desires, that's just silly.

Also, I should say that in no way did this involve race until you brought it up. It was a matter of language, which anybody can learn and is not based on race at all.

And you don't even have to learn English. One time I needed something on a French speaking forum, so I used chrome's translate feature in the top right and was able to communicate just fine. I adapted to follow the forum's guidelines and didn't try to make them accept my language.

I, for one, believe you have gotten this completely wrong. I believe that allowing multiple languages creates a more divisive community. Instead of forcing users to conform to an agreed standardised language (English) which suits to vast majority of users, you now have multiple pockets of users speaking their native language, creating a divide. Although providing an English translation would solve this issue; one must ask the question; what’s the point? If you need to provide a translation anyway, why have two languages meaning twice the work.

Calling the staff racists simply because they are not willing to learn additional languages to suit the wishes of a few, is not only wrong but an abuse of the word taking its meaning away from what a real racist acts like; extremely discriminatory and unaccepting of others cultures to an extent of hatred.

Additionally calling the people who do this job voluntarily ‘lazy’ because they do not have time to learn every language under the sun because you demand it is laughable, rude and outrageous.

I’ve not once seen someone call people who do not speak English ‘less trustworthy’, you are simply pulling the racism card again to get your way.

It’s a noble suggestion with a good, inclusive intent but I really don’t believe in practice this would ever work out.

it may be "the language of the internet", but I think this suggestion is more about it being convenient. In my case, I can speak decent english with good grammar (I think atleast), but it will always take me longer to write sentences in english, than if I were to write them in my native language.

Not just that, there are alot of people that can't speak english, that currently are not able to use this website.

Obviously, everyone that doesn't speak more than 1 language, will disagree - Imo that's a little bit selfish. Just because this may not be something that would profit you, doesn't mean that it wouldn't do good to this website.

In the end of the day, it's a marketplace (as you said yourself). There would be more members joining, more services, more buyers, more threads, more of everything.

English is basically the language that saves you when going to other countries.

I am portuguese and my native language has NOTHING to do with english (just banana).

If you want to travel, you gotta know English or at least know its basic words. This is an english speaking forum, if anything, this would just bring many threads in other languages. If you don't know english, at least try to know the basics.
