Banning the Sale of Minecraft Accounts

Hey all,

Recently, MCM made a good step in the right direction by enforcing strict policies against resource leakers and those affiliated. However, in the eyes of many, it was a half-baked effort knowing that this site thrives on the Minecraft TOS violating sales of accounts (and the other range of TOS violating services this website facilitates). I wish to see the removal of accounts as a step towards making this marketplace a platform that actually cares about ethics.

Why would we want to ban the sale of accounts?

1. Legitimize the marketplace. The site hypocritically enforces Rule 5.4 by striking down those who violate product ownership rights heavily, yet turns a blind eye to the sale of Minecraft Accounts which violates Mojang’s TOS. Choose one or the other. Remove 5.4 and commit to being a black market, or equally enforce your own rules across all sections of the forum. Being inconsistent and half-assed only annoys the community even more.
   
   
2. Get rid of our most toxic and notorious members. The accounts market is saturated, comprising of crackers stealing accounts, returning ban evaders and is also the section holding the most linked scam reports often closing due to inconclusive evidence.
   
   
3. The site no longer needs to allocate resources to develop features and moderate the section. "Opportunity cost"
   
   
4. MC-Market will not die. By considering points 1 and 3, MCM can become an even better place for everyone and expand into even more markets. There are far more and far better opportunities out there.

The site doesn’t need to be plagued by accounts anymore. This site has a bigger future for itself by legitimizing itself into a community that leads others. Honestly, I shouldn't even need to be trying to convince everyone by explaining all the benefits of removing the section. This should not have been even allowed on this site in the first place.

You keep mentioning how selling accounts is illegal and immoral. I don't think you're choosing the correct words for this.
Although it is not in line with the ToS of Mojang, that is not breaking any law (for example: Facebook v. Power Ventures)
Nor is it immoral. These are accounts we own. That we paid for. If we want to sell/trade it so another user can have a cool name in a block game, whats immoral about it? Please elaborate on this as it seems to be one of your big reasons for disbanding the account section.

You don’t own the accounts. You paid for a license to access their game through the account, however, that license requires that you not share that access with anyone else. Whether it be for monetary, legal, or other reasons, Mojang has the right to request this, because they are the content owners, selling access to you.
Everyone who has purchased an account has accepted that license agreement. If you violate that agreement, you’ve violated contract law. It’s unreasonable to think Mojang will pursue any repercussions for the violation of your contract with them. They’ll likely just terminate the account, however, that doesn’t make it okay.

MC-Market has long had the stance that the rights of content/property owners should be respected, and not to respect those rights is to behave immorally or unethically.

This is what I mean when I say that allowing the sale of Minecraft accounts is unethical and immoral. It contradicts everything we stand for as a platform dedicated to protecting the rights of content owners.

The size of a business does not detract from the fact that their rights are theirs, and ought to be respected and protected on our platform.

Ooh, a suggestion to accelerate the decline of this site! This would open an excellent business opportunity for someone!

Reminds me of when the 2016 auto-lock wave happened and everyone was confused, so the account forum was straight up removed. Then BeBosny wanted to approach the matter sensibly and I worked with him for a while to come up with a solution. Then he later gave me ACP (Admin Control Panel) access and I saw for myself that user count / traffic greatly increased. And of course revenue increased since a lot of people buy premium to sell their accounts. I’ll never forget that time, I had people messaging me “When is the account section coming back?!” For quite some time after we announced it would be added back. Funny to see MCM’s history being forgotten so quickly.

Also, not enforcing Mojang’s ToS on account sales is about as immoral as ripping the tag off your mattress.

Oh nooo, poor billion dollar company Mojang is losing a few bucks in profit to some teens selling minecraft accounts ;-; Now instead of making $1,000,000/day on MC sales, they’ll make a few hundred bucks less. How heartbreaking, how ever will they recover?! (Also holy shit, that $1,000,000 stat is real, apparently most days they sell 53,000 copies of MC on average which amounts to more than a million bucks a day.)

And honestly, I’d write a long effort-filled response, but at this point, I really don’t care. Users are shown no care, so why should we care about the site? I’m sick of all these empty promises being made and either never happening or taking 6 months to do a simple task that had an ETA of 24 hours. The sheer incompetence is astounding.

Removing the account section will mean a lot more sections will also have to be removed as said up here ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^^ it will remove a large amount of people from the forums. You cant just remove the account section AND the account section only.

I have been a member since 2014, when this site was created by a small group of developers in a Skype group chat which I was a part of, wanting a better place to sell their plugins and plugin development services. I watched this site grow from nothing.
I have been a staff member for nearly four years, and administrator for nearly two.
For a period of time, I was the entire resource moderation team.
For a period of time, I was was the scam resolver team.
The reputation system’s current functionality as well as the dispute system was my design.
I wrote the majority of MC-Market’s documentation. The rules, the wikis, the warnings, the staff policies.

I have served and I have protected this community as though it were my own family, and my familiarity is equally comparable.

You want to sell Minecraft accounts here, I understand. However, with respect, your statement is incorrect.

As I would lead my younger brothers away from illegal and immoral practices, I will do the same for MC-Market. That’s the kind of administrator I believe that a community of impressionable teens and young adults deserves.

then what would you exactly sell here? cause most of the sales on this site are accounts not only from minecraft but for other games and sites. This site would not function by just selling Artwork and Plugins. (not trying to sound mean I am more curious than anything)
