You must remember the governments here are providing a furlough scheme that pays for their wages while in lockdown. Here in the UK we have many government benefits such as free housing, universal credit, job seekers allowance, child benefits, family benefits and more to support struggling families. We're going into a one month lockdown now with 80% of wages being paid for. I don't support lockdowns for a long period of time, but having a 2-3 week isolation break will slow down the infection rate dramatically and will help hospitals from being overwhelmed.
I must remind you furlough has a maximum of £2,500 a month. This is about £30,000 a year. What about the people earning over that amount? They've just taken a huge pay cut.

In the UK there have been over 170,000 hospital admissions for COVID-19. There have been over 45,000 deaths.
So many people have died because of the governments inability to act.

Are national lockdowns an elegant solution? Definitely not.
Can national lockdowns even be considered a solution in the first place? Well, that's up for debate.

What should be clear to anyone is that the current measures and rules are NOT ENOUGH.

In my opinion, a full-scale national lockdown is going to be necessary very soon if the virus cannot be contained in the high-risk areas of the country - because more and more are popping up over time.
Am I happy about it? Definitely not. But the way I see it, human lives are more important.

Yes, lockdown brings a huge array of its own problems. But protecting yourself and others should be a priority.

You are entitled to your own opinion, but for goodness sake, please try to be selfless and logical about it.

Only last week were our lockdown restrictions eased in Melbourne. I completely understand the health restrictions of why the lockdown occurred and why in which it took so long. However, the mental health complications, domestic family violence disputes and not to mention the economic shutdown which has utterly and completely destroyed Australia's economy, has rocked a lot of families.

Year 12's (final year of high school) have been impacted severely. In Melbourne, around July, the restrictions were eased for the first time, schools went back, then not only four weeks later, everyone was forced back into lockdown. This caused major issues, particularly for state schools, who do have such advanced technological infrastructure as privately run schools.

I wholeheartedly understand why lockdown was necessary, but Melbourne's lockdown was the most brutal in the world (I believe).

The state/local government should NOT have the power to destroy your livelihood or cripple your ability to work or operate a business. End of story. Especially for a national lockdown, that is to much power to be wielded.

Seeing how abhorrent Europe is getting with their lockdowns makes me appreciate living in the U.S. even more with the freedoms and limits of government we have in place. In Paris right now, you literally cannot leave your property without government papers that permit you to otherwise. These lockdowns are draconian and are a disgusting power grab.

I suppose most of the people on here that voted in favor of lockdowns are too young to feel/understand the effects of a lockdown on their livelihood. Im sure they’d have a much different point of view if you had a mortgage, and a wife and kids to feed. Also temporary unemployment income is not the answer if that’s what you will rebuttal with. (And no I don't have a family or kids, but I can sympathize with those who do)
well if our president handled it properly in the first place we wouldn't be having this conversation lol

The current “low” mortality rate is thanks to our ability to take care of people who have severe symptoms. There are currently just enough ventilators and doctors/nurses to take care of them.

The only reason lockdowns are put in place is to prevent hospitals from overloading.
It is an effective method to bring morbidity down very rapidly.
It is not put as an attempt to get rid of the virus. No.

If we let the virus run it’s course, without social distancing nor lockdowns, quickly the majority of the population will catch it, and a huge amount of very sick people will rush to the hospitals all at once, causing the medical system to collapse, with doctors unable to take care of everyone, including those with other severe diseases.

If everyone used a mask, the virus would quickly disappear, but it requires everyone to obey this request, which is why it will not work. People have better things to do than being responsible.

The only way out of this is herd immunity. It has been proven that the majority of those who recovered from COVID-19 have developed immunity that lasted for 3-4 months. That’s not enough time to make the virus vanish.
The only way to achieve an effective and continuous herd immunity is by a vaccine.

Reports are saying that a vaccine will be ready for use in the 2nd quarter of 2021, and will be massively distributed across the entire world by the end if 2021.

Good luck to us all.

Yep just suck it up and face the lockdown. Where I’m from we had to do it and now we have zero cases, so it does work.

Obviously no one is overtly happy about having to spend months at home, but if I’ve done it and come out the other side, I’m sure you guys can too. People who are against lockdowns are the same people who are spreading the virus and causing for longer and unneeded quarantines. Just have common sense really.

Lockdowns are jarring, firstly the economy is dead and will keep dying and secondly there's no more money lol, this country can't afford to keep going into lockdown. If you're vulnerable or scared of the virus then stay home?

There have been over 45,000 deaths.
So many people have died because of the governments inability to act.
Deaths do not accurately reflect actual deaths from COVID-19. Our deaths are deaths for any reason where the individual tested positive within 28 days. This can mean someone can die from a car accident but can be 'attributed' to COVID-19 if they tested within 28 days of dying. This is where our deaths are inflated.

What should be clear to anyone is that the current measures and rules are NOT ENOUGH.
I personally think there should have been a "Tier 4" introduced, but even SAGE came out and said our tiered system was having an effect. MPs today in the lockdown debate stated we did not give the tiered system enough time. Many reports are coming out that our R number has dropped to 1-1.1 - and we haven't actually gone into lockdown yet.

We can’t afford to be giving money out over that amount. We’re taking out bonds (debt) that we must pay back and it’s us as millennials who will suffer. When we’re in lockdown we won’t be spending money on entertainment and travel, the main costs are mortgages and monthly payments. Remember, this is only for a month and those who earn over £30,000 I’m sure will be able to survive.
You have to understand that to the people earning over £30,000, they've grown accustomed to a certain standard of living. They have expenditures that match their earnings.

I'm willing to follow any rules just to have this virus be gone.
We will have to live with the virus for as long as we don't have a vaccine. And even then, a vaccine may not even get rid of it.

In my opinion its sad that theirs a lock down, the goverment(s) tried to not have to go under lockdown, yet people didn't take it seriously, did you see the beaches in the UK in summer?? it was shocking, crowded and no social distancing, no wonder why were going into the second or third lockdown.
Our beaches were full but COVID incidence was very low at this point. There have been no connections to outbreaks to people travelling to our beaches. Cases began rising exponentially when schools returned.

Yeah. We can all hope that a vaccine will be available soon to the public. It's just crazy how much testing needs to be done before it can be released.

Hopefully one in the near future!
