(If you voted on the poll please tell us why you chose what you did!)

Yo. After like 5 minutes of looking I've discovered that there are way more spigot forks than I thought. Is there any rule of thumb regarding them? Are there any things to watch out for? What's the reason to get a smaller fork instead of paper? Is it worth it to spend $200+ on a fork, or should you buy a $10 one? There are so many questions to ask.

Maybe if someone on a higher level of intelligence (so someone smart unlike me) could point all of us who are less knowledgeable in the right direction regarding spigot forks? I think a lot of people would appreciate it. Gonna leave a poll too, cause why not.

EDIT: One big thing I somehow left out is plugin compatibility. IMO a fork is almost always trash if it has horrible plugin compatibility. What're your thoughts on plugin compatibility?

It depends on the industry your in. If your running a Factions server, its a must to have a solid fork. If your running Practice, you also need a solid fork more KB driven for example. I feel like the competition is so high between servers now that you can't get away with Paper jars alone. You need the extra torque in certain cases, but if your questioning if you need one then you most likely don't need one.

Definitely not the smartest in the room about Spigots, but definitely for versions such as 1.12.2+ a cheap or free fork works completely fine. I for one use LightSpigot (made by call911) for my own 1.16.5 server

But if you're talking about 1.8.8, there's a lot of things to learn about and depending on what server you're running you can be looking at multiple things such as optimizations & prices. I personally recommend GemSpigot 2.0 by Diz if you're considering a 1.8.8 jar but it's not as simple as "the best of the best". As many people will tell you different things, but if Diz is here. He'd be more educated on the subject to tell you more in-depth.

Yeah I saw your review for LightSpigot when I was looking around lol. Personally, I'm not totally sure about the super high-end expensive spigots. Not because of quality concerns, but just because you're spending how much money for something that can or can't make a big difference? No offense to Diz or stellar or anyone btw, they have a great business going imo.

Totally. I get this from a lot of my clients. Servers should are an investment and should be considered as such. If you're running competitive then 100% you MUST go with one of the big 3 spigots. If you're not running competitive you have more flexibility depending on what you're doing.

Yea that seems reasonable. And if you already have a big enough and profitable server established, why wouldn't you get an expensive fork?

Think of it like this,
You're going to a job interview and you want to impress your might-be new boss.
You wear something fancy, expensive and nice to impress them.

That's why Spigots are to your players. You don't need them to succeed but they're
a HUGE boost to your overall image and server experience.

Overall depending on your gamemode & version then I can elaborate more.

The only thing I'm not sure about is how noticeable it would be for most players. (Usually) Cause I gotta be honest, I've never been able to tell if a server is forked or not. But maybe I just have a bad sense lol. But again this obviously depends on the gamemode etc. Otherwise I agree 100%

I always check the reviews and look at videos that compare spigot forks example: I also talk to other server owners about there experience with the jar and how good it was.

My lord that video hurts me to watch lol. But the only thing that concerns me is the reason wine is performing so much better than stellar, in that case, might be because wine was built more specifically for that stuff while stellar wasn't? That's speculation btw. I really have no idea.

I believe winespigot is built more towards factions

Do you have any recommendations for something that would work with skyblock and factions? (I know that sounds weird, dw about it) From the looks of it, wine would also work well with SB but I'm not sure.

It really depends.

If we are gonna talk about 1.8, The first thing you gotta take into account is the gamemode.

If you still run a factions server, Then Diz work is the best without a question.
I personally don't agree with some Factions spigots pricing but Stellar is the best option for factions so far considering the price too.

If you run gamemodes like Prison, Skyblock, Survival etc..
on 1.8, from a personal experience any spigot with a decent reputation would do the work. I've ran a skyblock server with 100 average players using my free 1.8 spigot and SpaceDelta spigot (free, made by diz) just fine, Unless you're server is making well over 200$ a month in profits, Buying a 200$+ spigot isn't worth it for those gamemodes as long as you optimize your plugins.

Now, For HCF, Practice, KitPvP and any pvp-focused gamemodes (which is what I am experienced with making the most) Those are quite unique if you want to do them professionally. Most plugins for those gamemodes will require extra handlers and events that most spigots get them wrong (including Diz's spigots haha)
Such as Armor events (equip and unequip), potions events (Add, Remove, Expire etc..), Movements handlers and more. Not to forget that you'll need a fairly detailed kb options and well made entities optimizations.
Your best bet is hiring a developer specifically for you to get the best results for now.

Now for 1.16, There are a bunch of good options that are free. Tuinity, Purpur and Airplane. They all have good support and are keeping up with their optimizations.
What Light Spigot 1.16 does, is combine everything from all around the known forks, And apply my own patches. That way you wouldn't have to worry about which is better, Otherwise they are all decently optimized

Any spigot that has an incompatibility with a plugin or a vanilla minecraft feature without the developer mentioning it is a BAD spigot. A spigot fork should never be incompatible with anything unless it's avoidable or the spigot is specifically made for private usage.
