For the dumb: Oceania is a region, Australia is a continent but the continent also includes Tasmania, New Guinea and a few others. But not New Zealand Kappa The continent Australia is located in the region Oceania

Australia is both a continent and country. The continent is also called Australia. It’s similar to how the United States of America is on the North American continent.

Oceania is a region.

Australia (the country) is part of that region (mostly).

The difference between the two is that a continent is a landmass. A region is a grouping of countries based on proximity to each other. For the most part, that is linked to the landmass that they share. For example the African continent is the large landmass and every country on it, is a part of the African region. While Madagascar is not on the landmass, but is in close proximity so is part of the African region as well. The same is true of Sri Lanka and Asia, as well as other Asian nations such as Japan and the Philippines.

So while Australia the country is on the Australian continent, it is also apart of the Oceania region, featuring small island nations who are isolated from any other region such as Asia or South America.

When it comes to the region of Oceania, There is a “Pacific Islands forum” which operates similarly to the EU or African Union, without the same effective powers, but apart from this, the only effective use of the region is for sport. For example in Football World Cup qualification, each country competes in a qualification tournament in their own region. There are minor changes to this, for example Israel is part of the Asian region, but competes in Europe due to other Asian nations refusing to play them. Australia also competes outside it’s region, competing instead in Asia, due to the lack of competition in the Oceania region.

I copy pasted that from something because I didn't want to bother writing.
