It isn't the same, not by a long shot. Literally nobody was choosing to self-isolate before schools and businesses began to shutdown with the small exception of those who actually came into contact with the virus. The world is in full panic mode because the media has been fear-mongering and making millions off of this crisis and conveniently leaving out important details such as the fact that the vast majority of those who have passed away were either old or had underlying health issues.

The reason this virus was able to spread globally was because world leaders were too slow to act on isolating the virus in Asia. We should've never allowed flights to return with potentially sick people.

And no, I absolutely have zero plans to self-isolate until I've had reason to believe I've come into contact with the virus. Again, I can't hurt people with what I don't have. If that makes me a cunt, then cool. I literally could care less about Internet opinions.

Are you still not understanding that the virus can have no symptoms for 2 weeks but still be spread? Its been mentioned multiple times but you glossed over it with your ridiculous sense of self importance.

The majority of people will act when world leaders and governments advise them to. That is their job after all, to guide the people they govern to certain decisions, especially in times of crisis. What shouldn't happen is people like you being complacent because "I CAnT sPREaD whAT I dOnT HAvE".

The media will make millions off of anything and everything, in this situation it has caused mass panic while not desirable has made people much more open to self isolate rather than becoming complacent.

What is it with americans saying "could care less". That literally means that you care a bit, if you're saying that you could care less about something else then... whatever..[DOUBLEPOST=1584969183][/DOUBLEPOST]
Yeah but as I mentioned those who have weak immune systems know themselves and isolate. Others who have stronger ones can catch it and recover and then they are immune.

I was being theoretically speaking, as I said, in reality this wouldn't work.

Problem is that theres been reports of people getting it multiple times so it may not be as clear cut as immunity

A week ago, I was amongst those saying no, I thought it was smaller than it is.

Now I realise how bad it really is

My grandfather has passed early this morning due to COVID-19. If it doesn't harm you, it definitely harms older generations and those with weaker immune systems / underlying health issues.

It's definitely dangerous, and I think it's solely dangerous due to human nature. We could easily contain the virus, but we have people like those at Miami Beach. We'll also go out of our way to buy up all the resources in the world, and all the TP just for people to not use them.

If you meant physically, the media has hyped up the danger that the virus poses to regular people tremendously. However, it could easily be fatal to the elderly and those with weakened immune systems or respiratory issues. My family and I all have hereditary immunocompromisation issues, so it's been a scary time.

It kills me to see people say that "the flu has killed more people so this disease is nothing, I'm getting on a plane to Italy for $30" etc, because that's how you become a carrier for the virus and get vulnerable people killed. And jxhdvn, I'm very sorry for your loss.

Socially, well, society is at a point of panic that it hasn't seen before on such a big scale, people are stressed and scared. The economy is inarguably damaged. Classes are cancelled, many basic services we've taken for granted are shut down. I've had to take on countless more remote hours at my job to help family who can't work right now. How some people are handling that stress - ie. hauling ass with 60 packs of toilet paper and medical supplies that are already in short supply for medical staff - is a testament to the people we are, I guess.

Personally, I hope that this brings to light the issues in social security systems (with areas not willing to shut down schools because people would become homeless, kids would starve, etc) but realistically, we'll probably just come away from it with some Hot Takes from the media about how phone radiation caused the virus to mutate, and nothing more.

I fully understand how the virus works and spreads. Again, I don't think you comprehend that if an individual doesn't have the virus, they therefore cannot spread the virus. Yes, if I were out and about and were in a region infected with the virus, I'd be putting myself and others at risk. However, if the virus isn't present, and the government officials who you even admitted inspire people to isolate haven't even imposed a quarantine, why is there any reason not to be complacent with my current position? Also, at what point did I claim to be important?

I say I could care less because I could care less. That has nothing to do with being an American...

From everything you have said so far you have clearly shown that you have no clue about how the virus works and spreads. Why have you still failed to realise that your whole community could have passed it around already without anyone knowing for weeks? Also how in hell do you know who does and doesn't have the virus? You as well as government officials have no live map on where the virus is spreading to through unknown people, this is partially due to the states having one of the poorest testing campaigns of the world meaning you guys are essentially blind to the spread.

It is a purely american thing to say "could care less" rather than "couldn't care less". As i described before the former implies that you care, not that you don't care.

Read some of the posts on this thread and it seems most people are like "This virus isn't bad - flu kills more people blah blah" and some are on the level as "This is the end of the world" -- both are wrong. This is going to affect the economy heavily and will probably be worse than 2008. I am from Dallas and we are in a shelter in-place for 3 weeks starting today. This means that all businesses are closed not including places that provide essentials (food, water, supplies).

One of my parents had to layoff their entire sales team, kitchen staff, housekeeping staff, etc. at a popular hotel. People are not going to make rent, bills, etc. I have not been through something like this neither have my parents. We are in some interesting times but it's not the end of the world. If we did nothing about it - 2 million Americans would die. So yes the coronavirus is bad news.

While the virus itself is not that bad, we should still be aware that it exists and do all we can to prevent it from spreading even further. The real problems are the consequences to the world economy and the panic in brings to people.

It definitely as abad as it sounds. I'm in the UK and they just declared a Lockdown of all the citizens. But realistically, a Lockdown isn't going to help.

It takes 1 deliveroo driver to spread it to 1,000 then it goes on and on and on!

Corona is not that bad, it's just a flu known as a "virus" so like, if you're old and have diabetes or other lung issues and such, you are more probably to die, buy if you're young you shouldn't be worrying, but perhaps, stay home so you don't make doctors life harder.

While you guys are arguing over this with paragraphs and essays. I’ll just give you the short and simple answer, yes it is that bad.

Yes, it is that bad and I really wish people would figure this out.
All you have to do is sit your ass at home and do NOTHING.
How hard is that? Flatten the curve and we will be okay.

it is 4x more dangerous than the flu, it's infected 531,708 people and killed 24,053, sure 122,203 people have recovered, but that's a 4.5% death rate off those stats . it is much more dangerous than the flu, it may not affect say people of younger ages as much but it is still very bad, it's worth the reaction. we shouldn't be panicking but in my country the US people are acting as if it's nothing bad, now we're #1 in cases. even if you won't suffer bad from it think of all the people who will and how it will effect the hospitals and the economy. it is something not to be taken lightly
