Hey! Glad to see you are interested in the Armed Services! I have been in for just about 3 years now. I enlisted at the age of 17 (Junior in High School) and decided to go with the split op program. I did basic training between my junior and senior year (in the summer) and came back to complete my senior year of high school. After the completion of my high school life I went off to AIT (Advanced Individual Training) or in this case your job training. I have been at my current unit since October of 2018 and I am having the time of my life (normally, the army is real good at fucking you). Nonetheless, it's a great career path. While I am in no way a recruiter nor am I going to try to persuade you in any way I would highly suggest looking into your options and talking to some recruiters. Granted when talking to recruiters ensure you have a parent present when speaking with them and DO NOT sign ANYTHING unless you talk to your parents first. I enlisted as a 12N which is a heavy equipment operator. I love my job in the army, and its great to have the experience with them as it's a transferable job to your own civilian life. But, definitely weight all your options and don't jump the gun.

Furthermore, if you aren't fully set on enlisting I would recommend the National Guard (Army Side). It's a great balance between Military Life, and Civilian. You can still have a normal paying job Monday-Friday, and you do your one weekend a month and then 2 weeks in the summer. A lot of things a recruiter won't tell you, and I certainly will is in the Guard (a weekend warrior) is simply not just that. You are able to obtain different orders, and do a ton of super cool things at no cost to you, and experience a lot of things most active duty people will not. For instance, I am going to Michigan for a week in December to learn how to operate HVEE - 1. Basically a Backhoe that does 60MPH and is up armored. Another example would be different types of schools you can attend. Concrete mixer school, plumber, electrician etc. There is a lot of opportunities. While all the things I just listed are pertaining to my specific MOS, there are a lot of other school for every other MOS that you can go to, and most of them are going to be OUT OF STATE! Go experience the country, if not the world. My unit just came back from a 3 week deployment to Romania, when they tell you the guard doesn't go overseas that is a complete lie. I am going to California for a month next summer for NTC training. Not to mention, anything else I decided I want to do between now and then. If war is up your ally, and you want to be deployed, guess what the National Guard has a HIGHER deployment rate than active duty does. Either way, I am not trying to sell you on one thing or the other, but I am going to tell you the truth you'll never hear from a recruiter. There is a LOT of shitty stuff that you will have to do, and things you won't like but believe me, once you get past your IET training, and get to your unit, that's when the fun begins. You will hear me say I hate the army a million times a day, but at the end of the day I don't know what I would do without it. It's a whole nother family that you never thought you'd have, and they are all there to help you better yourself. Those people at your unit want to see you succeed more than anyone else will. They are there for you with whatever you need, and the benefits that come with the military are incredible. I wish you the best, but ensure you weight your options, and make sure you pick what is best for you!

TL;DR - To bad you're beat go read it you might learn a thing or two.

To be honest, this is the sort of question you need to sit down and ask yourself, not others.

My father turned down countless uni offers (Loughborough, Warrick, etc) to join the RAF, and it's been the best decision he's made to this date. Though you have to be sure that going into the RAF/army is what you want - you don't want any hesitation or doubt, otherwise, it'll screw with you.

What sort of areas within the RAF/army are you looking at?

If you are going that route, I would recommend joining RAF if you like rocketry and aerodynamics. Weapons design would also work there too.
