Why are you assuming there are brackets like (2(9+3))?
It could just as easily be (48/2)(9+3)
You shouldn't assume there is anything more than the problem itself. It isn't (48/2)(9+3), or 48/(2(9+3)). It's 48÷2(9+3).

How about this? Whats wrong with this?

The answer is 288.

48 / 2 (9 + 3) - Initial Question
48 / 2 (12) - Solve the Bracket
24 (12) - Solve the Quotient (Work from Left to Right - There is no 'bracket' to solve)
288 - Solve for Product

-4^2 is actually -16. (-2)^2 is 16.

You don't include the negative sign when squaring unless there are brackets.
No you are wrong -4*-4=16[DOUBLEPOST=1452041920,1452041840][/DOUBLEPOST]

That is correct.

oh my god this thread...
48÷2(9+3)
First calculate the brackets
9 + 3 = 12

2(9+3) = 2 x (9+3)
= 2 x 12 = 24

Then 48 ÷ 24 = 2....

it's the one and only answer

Division is always priority over multiplication, so you'd do that and get 24(9+3)

Brackets prioritise multiplication too so 24(12) = 288

288 is also what Google gives, and Google is never wrong.

Apart from it's the wrong answer... You prioritised multiplication over division which is wrong.

this is what google is calculating:

Which is not what the question is asking
When there's no "x, ÷, + or -" it means multiply
