[Minecraft Server Owners] Would you actually use a Discord bot to track player retention and staff activity on your server?

Hey everyone, I am considering building a Discord bot specifically for Minecraft server owners. Before I spend serious time on it, I want to know if this is actually useful or if I am solving a problem that does not exist.

The idea: a bot that connects to your server and gives you a weekly digest inside Discord covering:

  • Player funnel (how many joined your Minecraft server this week, how many stayed past 30 minutes, how many came back the next day)
  • Staff activity summary (who handled tickets, who has been inactive, response times via your discord server)
  • A simple health score that tells you at a glance if things are improving or declining (includes things like TPS, Memory / CPU usage)
My honest concern: most of you can just log into your server and see what is happening. So I want to know:

  1. Do you actually find yourself wanting visibility into your server when you are NOT logged in? (phone, at work, etc.)
  2. Is the retention/funnel data something you think about, or do you just go by feel?
  3. Would you pay a small monthly fee for this ($5-10/month) or only use it if it were free?
  4. What would actually make you install this versus just ignoring it?
Please let me know honestly, as I think Discord is a good way to watch stuff (you're more likely to be on discord 24/7 than your Minecraft client, plus you can always review what happened while you're asleep) or if it's not a very effective idea for server owners. Thank you in advance <3

Hey Troaxx!

The idea sounds great, but there's already things out there that do this. You can track joins and such under your domain management in most cases, and there are bots such as DiscordSRV which can track your TPS etc.

As for paying a monthly fee for this - it's not really something which provides much benefit to server owners, unless obviously they're doing something such as advertising and want to see if it's working. The staff activity summary is also rather interesting, but I'm pretty sure other bots do already have this included too (Or in my experience they do)

Good luck with the project though, I hope it all works out great for you!

Hey, thanks so much for the reply!! Actually I'm asking because I haven't really done much research on current hosting services and I am unsure if the capabilities have changed greatly - I had minecraft servers in the past where discord was not a big thing yet and it wasn't used as community.

I believe yes domain management can tell you how many people joined, but do they take in metrics such as how many players joined uniquely, played for 30min (or other set timings), e.g you have a SMP server, you might want to know how many users and left? Would basically provide a retention funnel for them as another way to track different metrics that may or may not exist.

I am aware plugins like Plan exist (https://www.spigotmc.org/resources/plan-player-analytics.32536/) but I was wondering if I could make it more action-oriented e.g making suggestions based on data.
