Probably going to be very controversial. We all know that IP addresses are public information and are not always accurate to finding the location of someone or whatever.

However, to deter the behavior of scamming and getting away with just a ban, I argue we should release the scammer's IP address. They'll probably use VPNs that bypasses MCM's measures against them but whatever, I say there are many small time scammers who should have this public information be released and whatever happens to them isn't on MCM's fault.

Again IP is just public information.

Edit:
While I certainly don't support this, what I can say is that MCM is perfectly free to release everyone's IP address and if they really wanted to, they could potentially sell it to other entities lol. (Since this is MCM, I'm going to preempt a question - yes, the Federal Court of Australia has ruled that IP addresses are not considered to be personal information and therefore are not protected by Privacy or Data Protection Laws.)

^ Says enough about IP addresses being considered public information where Mick lives.

High performance, consistent uptime and fast support. Minecraft hosting that just works.

Not sure what kind of reaction you expected when making a post like this. The suggestions section is for USEFUL suggestions.

You know leaking ip's is illegal when its linked to a specific person...
This means if you want to mark an ip as fraud, scam etc... thats fine, but if you want to leak an ip to a specific account, that is illegal.

tldr; close this shit thread
there is a valid argument, though, that in australia this is perfectly allowed, which is where mick lives

The thing is, scammers will have already be banned. There is no point to releasing their ip's afterwards, since 99% of the time alternates of banned users will be caught onto in less than a day.

Yes, what they did is bad, but the AU isn't the only country. Someone will be BOUND to ddos them, doxx them, etc. Especially if it's someone who got scammed.

With an ip address, if you're smart enough, you can do multiple things that can be damaging to them.

  • location, if that address is associated with a given geography in a location mapping database.
  • mobile network carrier, if the address is associated with a mobile IP network.
  • anything else recorded in a database keyed with IP addresses.
I get it, they're dirty scammers who were big brokies enough to scam you out of 20$, but making their ip addresses public on a site where they'd obviously be antagonized isn't the smartest idea.

They're only public information when companies or trustworthy sites have access to it, but when you place it publicly on a site with a bunch of teenagers who were likely scammed by those persons, guess what happens next? hint: court case

TLDR: no.

this won't happen and scammers would just use a VPN so what's the point of releasing the IP of a VPN

This is like ebay leaking a sellers email, ip, adress, paypal and name if they sold an item that didn't fit the description of what they are doing. McM could get sued for slander and leaking public info.
You can't get sued for leaking public information, but either way it's very dumb and the suggestion needs to be denied. lmao

They could, IPs not considered public information under GDPR, at least for European citizens, even if the forum staff/hosting/registered company is not in Europe.

Earlier this morning the OPs IP was leaked by another market site. But this market site was not about Minecraft, but instead children. It has been confirmed that the OP has commited scooter ankle.
I committed a scooter ankle? Nani?
