Tempering
Tempering adds a tiered gear upgrade system built around risk and cost. Hold the weapon, tool, or piece of armor you want to upgrade, open the Forge, and spend experience levels, money, or a material for a chance to add a temper. The item never leaves your hand, so nothing can be lost to a misclick. Higher tiers cost more and succeed less often, so gearing up plays like a real risk instead of a one-time enchant swap.
Built for: Survival, SMP, and any server that wants gear progression beyond vanilla enchants.
10 tempers across four gear types
The Forge
/temper opens the Forge on the item in your hand. It shows every temper that fits that item's type, its current tier, the next tier, the success chance, and the exact cost. Clicking one opens a confirm step before anything is spent, so nothing is charged by accident.

Configuration
Every temper (display name, icon, max tier, what it applies to, description, magnitude per tier, success chance per tier) lives in config.yml, along with the cooldown, failure mode, costs, the Temper Dust item, and sounds and particles. All player-facing text is in messages.yml with full MiniMessage support. Run /temper reload to apply changes without a restart. Updates add new config keys without wiping your settings.

10 tempers across four gear types
- Weapons (swords, axes, tridents). Sharpness (bonus attack damage), Ferocity (faster swings), Lifesteal (heal a fraction of the damage you deal), Ember (chance to set the target on fire).
- Tools (pickaxes, shovels, hoes, axes). Prosperity (chance for bonus experience when you break a block).
- Armor (helmets, chestplates, leggings, and boots). Vitality (bonus max health), Toughness (bonus armor), Bulwark (knockback resistance).
- Boots only. On top of the 3 armor tempers above, boots can also take Swiftness (bonus movement speed while worn) and Cushion (less fall damage while worn), so a pair of boots can carry up to 5 tempers.
The Forge
/temper opens the Forge on the item in your hand. It shows every temper that fits that item's type, its current tier, the next tier, the success chance, and the exact cost. Clicking one opens a confirm step before anything is spent, so nothing is charged by accident.
Cost and risk
- Three cost types. Experience levels, money through Vault (optional), and a material, either a vanilla item like iron ingots or the plugin's own Temper Dust. Any combination can be turned on at once.
- Cost rises with tier. Every attempt costs more at a higher tier, using a base amount plus an amount added per tier, both set in the config.
- Success chance drops with tier and is set per temper, so pushing to tier 5 is always a gamble.
- Failure has a setting. A failed attempt can leave the temper as it was or drop it one tier, and refunding the cost on failure is a toggle.
- A short cooldown between attempts stops menu spam.
Commands
- /temper (aliases /tempering, /forge) opens the Forge on your held item.
- /temper info lists the tempers on your held item.
- /temper list shows every temper, what it does, what it applies to, and its max tier.
- /temper clear strips every temper from your held item, with a confirm step first.
- /temper reload reloads config.yml and messages.yml.
- /temper give <player> <temper> <tier> applies a temper directly.
- /temper dust <player> [amount] hands out Temper Dust.
Permissions
- tempering.use opens the Forge and covers info, list, and clear. Default: everyone.
- tempering.admin covers reload, give, and dust. Default: operators.
