Retinue
Retinue gives every player a companion mob that does real work, not just a mob that walks behind you. It follows you around, jumps into your fights, and picks up dropped items and experience for you while you keep moving. Companions level up the more they are used, and you can switch between four types with different strengths as you unlock them.
Built for: Survival, SMP, and any server that wants a functional pet system instead of a purely cosmetic one.

Leveling and four companion types
Your companion earns experience when you kill a mob near it and when it gathers an item, leveling up to a configurable cap. Switch its type with /retinue type: Loyal is the balanced default, Guardian trades damage for a much bigger health pool, Hunter hits harder and moves faster at the cost of health, and Forager keeps a wider gathering radius. Each type is unlocked by its own permission, so you control who gets access to which type.
One menu for everything
/retinue menu opens a simple GUI showing your companion's name, type, level, experience, and current behaviour, with click-to-toggle buttons for stay/follow, gathering, and cycling type, plus a dismiss button. Rename your companion any time with /retinue rename <name>.

Configuration
config.yml sets the default companion type, summon cooldown and death cooldown, max follow distance, the full leveling curve and XP sources, base stats and per-level growth with hard caps, gathering radius and whether overflow drops at your feet, and whether companions take environmental damage. Each companion type is its own block in the config, so you can retune stats or add new types. All player-facing text is in messages.yml with full MiniMessage support. Run /retinue reload to apply changes without a restart.

Summon a companion
- /retinue summon brings your companion to your side. A short cooldown applies between summons, plus a longer one if your companion was just killed.
- The companion follows you automatically and teleports back if it drifts too far or you change worlds.
- It persists through logout and server restarts, saved per player.
Fights and gathers for you
- Your companion joins in when you fight, targeting whatever is attacking you.
- It sweeps a radius around itself for dropped items and experience orbs and brings them back to you, so you keep moving instead of backtracking for drops.
- Toggle stay-and-guard mode with /retinue stay if you want it to hold a spot instead of following.
- Toggle item gathering on or off at any time with /retinue gather.
